Journey South - Not Cool?
I was looking at the Mirror web page today and there is a section, which is presumably featured in the paper itself. It's Polly's-X-Factor-Ometer in which she gives her opinion each week on the remaining contestants.
What struck me was her comments on Journey South. Whilst this is only one reporter, I do wonder if the feeling that they are not considered 'cool' might well be the general consensus within the industry. Unfortunately, if it should be so and they are deemed not to be 'cool' this wouldn't do them any favours should they win. I have no doubt that there are magazines etc., that might have a different vibe, but that might be dependant on their readership, and not based on the general public as a whole, as newspapers tend to be. I have to say, speaking for myself, that they do seem a bit too middle of the road from what I have seen of them. I'm sure that their fans will support them to the hilt, but I do wonder if that support will extend beyond those who watch the show to a wider audience, once it's over. |

That's what I think of them. Altough they have good voices that blend well, I really think duo's are kinda outdated and I don't see what they would bring that's particularly unique except for that.

They are my second favourite act in the competition but I do feel they might struggle further down the line after the series has been forgotten as will most of the acts really.

I think anyone who has been in the XF would struggle to get themselves called "cool" by the media.

Nobody there have nothing really different to offer... they are all the same what we already have , so in my opinion we just need to vote for the one who is "your" taste and in "your" opinion will bring some pleasure listen to. they trying to make Shayne a copy of Justin, Andy a new Sinatra, Brenda new Diana Ross or something like, the CS well don’t even start with them, Chico will be new Chick girls (sorry spelling is not my thing I am not English)with better singing abilities and last Nicholas new Lemar... I never liked Lemar in Fame Academy any way. So if Journey South is not cool for this Polly girl maybe some one will say different.

Good post Maria - I think you have hit the nail on the head - there are already better versions of all the acts in the XF..
I suppose JS are almost an exeption to this rule - can't really think of any other similiar guitar playing duo's - The Proclaimers are much more folky, I suppose they could be an updated version of the Everley Bros.. |

I don’t know here in UK but in Brazil where I am from, we have lots of duets, men, women but they do a more country style music, I love though...

None of the X-factor contestants are cool, its a reality TV show, and after the show is over, they should do the decent thing and go away.

I thought their whole appeal was that they are totally nerdy and not cool.
the type of thing that appeals to middle aged housewives. That's their target audience I thought? |

They are in my top 4 to win. I'd love to hear some of the stuff they have written themselves. I think it might shed a whole new light on their act. I like them though.

I think if I saw the Journey South guys in my local I'd think they were a couple of style-less jerks.

Does it matter whether JS are cool or not though? If people like their music then fine, as it was originally said, their fans probabaly think they are cool.
I'm sure that being 'cool' is the last thing on Carl and Andy's minds at the moment though. They have much more important things to focus on......like winning the X Factor.......

I don' t think Journey South are cool at all. That's part of their appeal. They are being themselves and are not submitting to pressure to conform What's cool at the moment? Akon? Crazy Frog? Exactly!

Sad but true in the music industry these days if youre not seen to be "cool" as they put it, knowone wants to know you. Real talent is a rarity these days so when the music industry do see they it they dont know what to do with it, and unless real talent is nurtured and managed properly it aint gonna get anywhere, again very sad but very true. If i had one thing to say to any up and coming artist of today it would be stay true to yourself and do not become anyones puppet.

No JS are not "cool". To be fair though any artist who appears on a reality show is not considered "cool" by those who judge such things.
When someone says this to me though that someone isn't cool or credible my first thought is "who says?" There are many artists out there who have very succesful careers but are not considered cool. As to whether JS will be successful its all down to the marketing. I do like JS - and they are in my top 3, however, I am not sure yet where they are going to aim for in the market - and if they are going to be a success then it will require some very clever marketing to find their niche. Personally I think its an older age group, people who know what they like and stick to the tired and testeds, but are willing to try something a bit different - as long as its not too different from what they are used to. |
