8000T Memory problems
ChairmanMeow
17-11-2005
I ran an 8000T for about 5 months without switching to standby or powering off. First I noticed that the EPG stopped working (for non BBC channels only!) then, about a week later it froze for the first time in my experience. An unplug/replug sorted the problem.

IMO there seems to be a memory problem.

My question is, does a switch to standby cure known memory problems or should I power off every 3 months to be safe. (I'm not an ecowarrior BTW!).

TIA.

I've had my 8000T for around 10 months and normally leave it in standby. The only lockups it had were when the EPG changed recently and the Humax didn't take kindly to some of the new MHEG streams from E4 and QVC in particular (they caused it to crash.) It all seems to be stable again now.

If it gets left on permanently for any reason such as when it is already making a recording when I go to bed and no one is around to turn it off, I find the video output starts to suffer from a slight shimmy/wobbling effect as though its output might br over heating. Has anyone else had that? As an aside, it ought to be gifted with the same system as the 9200T to enable it turn off by itself when a recording has finished. For the record, putting the 9200T into standby doesn't immedialtely end a recording as it does on the 8000T.

I find I need to leave the 9200T on almost permantly to avoid loosing the EPG data and to cope with its other foibles. Hopefully these will soon be corrected at which stage I'll normally leave that one on standby too.

I am sure there are memory problems with the 8000T since the last OTA update (April 2005), as it is now incapable of holding full seven day epg for all channels. You can get round it by switching it to the channel or mux that you want to see seven days ahead for, as it slowly fills that up while dropping most others from about three days ahead to make space.

Hopefully Humax will eventually fix this self created fault, but probably their focus is fully on the new baby on the block and the numerous teething problems it is having.

Are you aware of the problems with the 8000T spontaneously rebooting following the EPG channel changes a few weeks ago and some dodgy MHEG being broadcast by a few channels?

Initially, the advice from Humax was to do a reset to Factory Condition. I am not sure if this helped or not but it is worth a try. You will lose your recording schedule but *not* your saved recordings.

The otherthing you may want to try is to delete the TUTV channels and any other channels which you never watch. The theory is that this should leave more room for EPG info for the remaining channels.

I tried this, I deleted all channels except
BBC1
BBC2
BBC3
BBC4
ITV1
ITV2
ITV3
ITV4
C4
More4
E4 &+1
FIVE
UKTVHistory
SKY THREE
ABC1
M+M
News 24
R1
R2
R3
R4
6 Music
BBC7
World Service
Oneword

It made no difference to the EPG problem even though half the channels are deleted. The only way round it is to change channel to the station you need program info for.
