I love them both and honestly find its gruelling to do this but I want some differing opinions.

Shrek (the original) definetly has the most appealing and straight forward story with Shrek being sent to rescue Princess Fiona hence falling in love with her and the rest is history whilst the second doesn't really have a good flowing story and really relies on the characters performances more than anything + it has Puss in Boots which really helps it alot.

I think Lord Farquay was also a much better villain than The Fairy Godmother (despite being voiced by the fabulous Jennifer Saunders)

Overall I think I'd go for Shrek though.

For story, Shrek, for laughs, Shrek 2.

Shrek 1 had the better story.

Shrek 2 had the better jokes. "It's a thong!"

I would rate them the same as eachother though, 9/10 each, both brilliant films.

Shrek 2 for me.

Does anyone else have trouble watching the first film all the way through? I never seem to manage to do it now.

DEFINATELY the origional for me

second one was good, but a bit too smooth. Wasn't convinced by the "lets be ugly" sentiment second time round either. It seemed less genuine/heartfelt and more contrived.

Also was I the only person expecting the cat to be an "enemy in our ranks" and was slightly disapointed when he wasn't? (yes? ok then!)

Finally, a more twisted storyline and John Lithgow clinched it for me!

I actually found Shrek 2 to be most appealing and straight forward in terms of the storyline and the fact that personally, I found the storyline to be much more amusing than the first Shrek movie means that I have always preferred watching Shrek 2 to Shrek.

The fairy godmother was perhaps my most favorite villain in the whole Shrek series, whilst Prince Charming was my second most favorite villain in the whole Shrek series!

I know this thread is real old....but what the hell!!!

Remember absolutely adoring Shrek very much, but instantly being really disappointed in No.2.
to be fair, as much as I didn't like No.2, its fantastic and a piece of art compared the 3rd and 4th one.

Shrek 1 is a classic, Shrek 2 was ok but not as good as the first film.

Shrek, easily. Shrek 2 is where the pop-culture references get completely out of hand. There were a few of them in the first film, but it's packed with them in the sequel.

I remember liking 2, but not as much as the 1st one, which is still excellent today, has its own charm and not as many pop jokes.
The 3rd one was poor, 4th one was surprisingly good

I like all 4 Shrek movies, on Bluray they look absolutely stunning.

I rate them as:

1. Shrek
2. Shrek 2
3. Shrek Forever
4. Shrek The Third

Like both of them but I say Shrek 2 is the best alot more going on and does what good sequels do, move the story on.
