I'm just after hearing it starts next saturday but the better news is that it says charity & novelty songs are banned i.e the likes of tony christie & crazy frog. But will someone please make my day and say Mcfly are banned cos they released a charity single. I think this now makes the competiton more belivable.

P.s : Anyone see T4 awards today. What a joke! but nice to the sugababes get a good few nominations. Anyone agree?

Sugababes or Kelly Clarkson to win record of the year

I totally agree on the T4 awards, embarrassing, McFly winning virtually every category, it isn't a very credible awards show anyway, "Most Snoggable Male" category what a load of rubbish.

ROTY is a joke. The best record never wins it's just the best looking boyband that takes the prize

T4? Y'mean Smash Hits Poll Winners Party (an awards ceremony they scrapped one year because they couldn't find anybody to turn up) then yeah.

McFly can still qualify with I'll Be OK or Obviously.

How many of Westlife's number ones are cover versions? They should be banned on that basis, the useless twonks but they won't because cover versions are allowed.

....who in their right mind thought or even believed that Thunderbirds by Busted was last year's Record of the Year!?

It's a convenient scam for ITV for them not to care though (you have to vote to win and obviously, Busted fans cared enough to vote).

Well, the defining song of 2005 has to be James Blunt - You're Beautiful (if only for the massive amount of airplay it got).

But yes, I agree that Westlife will probably win with yet another cover version. Maybe they should have a rule that cover-versions are exempt?

James Blunt I would like to see get it.

Last year was awful, Anastacia deserved the award, but then Busted just pipped her

I saw an advert on the TV the other night for Westlife's new album. It commented on "You Raise Me Up" by proclaiming (I'm paraphrasing):

"Once in a while a song is released which captures the heart of a nation."

I never realised Westlife were comedians.

I'd love to see Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone win the award, it's still doing great 20 weeks on.

Since U Been Gone is an absolutely amazing song which deserves to get the Record of The Year but will probably not make it since it is by an american artist even though it is far an away better than anything else released this year.

Yes James Blunt has released the nicest song of the year but probably won't win. I expect he'll get 4th place or something.

PLEASE don't say that!

I would like either James Blunt, Sugababes or Pussycat Dolls to win.

McFly to win, purely cos their fans will vote several times at once.

hey everyone. yeah sad fact is someone like westlife will probably win, although i have to admit i am quite fond of you raise me up.
For me, there have been some amazing songs this year, i definitely agree about Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson. Also for me, there's been James Blunt, Daniel Powter and Trippin by Robbie. I think its a shame that Make Me Pure wont be included in time for it because its one of Robbies best songs over the past few years! x

Even thought I'd rather slit my own wrists than watch this pile of poop again, I'd prefer Westlife won it to Kelly Clarkson which some of you seem to be going on about.

It's about which song has had the most appeal over the past year which Kelly C certainly has not.

It's down to one of these:
James Blunt
Westlife
Pussycat Dolls
Tony Christie - probably the rightful winner as it's had more appeal than any of the others.

Did anybody not notice that last year, there was a major divide in which song was favourite depending on the area of the UK?

I noticed that the north, scotland and ireland were more in favour of anastacia, and the south and wales were more in favour of the cheese that is busted.

Anybody else notice this? or was it just me?

Coldplay's "X & Y" for me. It's a great album from a great band.

Surely record of the year should be decided through sales and sales alone.

Or am I being to stupid?

Its for singles not albums the programme, I do think that Fix You should be at least in the top 5 though!

Depends on your criteria.

Some will go for qualitative (critics, industry award, etc; ) and some will go quantative (radio play, public perception, number of sales, phone votes, etc; ).

It's not an award the indie or the muso crowd are into and one they're not likely to care about (in essence, this is pop record of the year).

I don't think pop fans care too much for Jonathan King's sham of a show but they're than likely to vote for who's nominated because they're the ones who care enough to vote.

I expect McFly to narrowly pip Westlife ina monotonously fixed contest (unless they've used up all their phone and text credits for the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party).

Nah, it should be the song that 2005 is remembered for.

The highest seller is probably Crazy Frog.
