Nice to see they've picked someone deserving for a change.

Can't help but feel disappointed that he'd agree to it though. Another anti-establishment figure from my youth caves into his own ego.

Surely, he did that when he started singing in an American accent

Not necessarily. Knowing Weller, there's every chance he won't turn up.

They don't give it to you unless you promise to turn up. I'd guess you have to sign a contract.

Nonsense. They may assume the recipient is going to turn up, but that's only because it's considered such a prestigious award. Like I said, it'd be just like Weller to blow out the ceremony and send his road manager or one of his kids up to receive the gong instead.

That may be true of more prestigious awards like the Oscars but I assure you they don't just pick someone for the Brits. It's all depending on who they can get to appear. If you don't appear you don't get one.

Why do you think people like Duran Duran have received one? Because they were the only one's who agreed to turn up that year.

They have never given it to someone who hasn't been there ready to play a set of their greatest hits.

Well, Mr Weller has been my hero for more years than I would like to admit and I'm so chuffed for him.
I think the lyrics on his new album are great (especially Savages - can't see that can be seen as selling out )
Also saw him live last week and the attitude still seems to be firmly in place!

Good on Paul Weller. A great choice. I don't see the smallest reason why he shouldn't accept the award. I expect him to turn up in person and make some intelligent and pointed remarks. If he skulks off instead, which I really don't think he will, then I'll think less of him.

Maybe I am being old fashioned them.

I just used to like it when popstars were a bit more belligerent. These days they seem happy to just be light entertainers. And the Brits epitomise that for me.

I remember Paul McCartney turned it down one year, and they gave it to the Spice Girls.

To be honest, if it's the likes of McCartney that turn these things down, then I'd happily accept it. Quite what the obsession is with "the establishment" I don't know. Isn't that just some made up thing so that people can pretend they're rebels?

I'd rather him just shut up and play myself.

Did you see Damon Albarn the other night at the UK Music Hall of Fame thing? When he asked what the f*** Tony Blair was doing there - I thought he spoke for England. Well for me anyway

Well the Duran Duran thing was embarrassing for sure. Far better to have a deserving winner like Paul Weller who could never be a 'light entertainer' no matter how many gongs the industry gave him.

I'm not saying I don't want him to be belligerent! I want him to use the platform to put a rocket up the backside of the music industry, because it certainly needs one. I just don't see anything gained by him staying away and saying nothing.

I'm very happy for musicians to speak, especially on issues relating to the parlous state of the music industry.

I don't understand why he paid tribute to Eurythmics either, I am big fan of the band and Annie Lennox isn't exactly what you would call a big fan of the world leaders at the moment due to the whole poverty thing that is going on.

Paul Weller is a deserving recepient (or however you spell it) considering who else has received it over the years.

Yes - he's deserving of it. His older stuff is much better, IMO - Wild Wood, Stanley Road, etc.

When I first heard "Down the Tube Station at Midnight" - I had to replay it about 10 times on the trot. Incredibly powerful and different - and I first heard it more than 15 years after it was released. I think that his stuff post-Jam doesn't compare, but he deserves the award just for that song IMHO.

Apparently Kate Bush was offered a Lifetime Acheivement award at the Brits a few years ago but she turned it down because they wanted her to perform at the cerimony.

Although i'm not a fan of Paul Weller at all i do see the influence on other acts he's had over the years, so i guess he does deserve some sort of award.
