I have the HXD710 (from KK Electronics and sold as 'multi-region'). When dubbing from HDD to DVD I do not find the option for 'Fast' dub mode. According to the manual I should be able to scroll through the dub mode settings (HQ, HSP, SP etc) and get to 'Fast'. I have tried to use 4x DVD+RWs (Philips brand) and 8x DVD+Rs (Infiniti) but with both I cannot see the option for 'fast' and the dubbing happens at 1x speed. I have also tried both dubbing a single title and multiple titles to find the setting but no joy.

In the manual it mentions that you cannot do 'High-speed dubbing' if 'titles contain both main and sub sounds' but I do not understand what is meant by this.
Can anybody advise on how to achieve high-speed dubbing from HDD to DVD on this machine? Is it to do with the discs I am using or could it relate the multi-region conversion done by the shop?

I think your problem may well be your +RW discs.

Are you recording your programs in 16:9 widescreen if so the +R/RW format cannot be used to store the 16:9 broadcast in it original format and the Sony will re-encode the recorded broadcast into 16:9 letterbox format and dub that format to the +RW disc at 1x as it encodes and records to the DVD at the same time

Towards the front of the manual there is a double page table showing the capabilities of each DVD disc type +/- R/RW and Dual layer discs are listed. this should tell you everything you need to know

I use -R/RW discs now, I was staunch +R/RW user until I found out this problem with the D710/D910 machines, as I won't live without my 16:9 recordings I had to convert, I now dub to 6x -RW's and 16x -R discs using the Fast dud mode at full speed using DVD-Video mode

I'd missed that bit of the manual and your answer makes perfect sense.
I'll be shopping for some 6x DVD-RWs tomorrow. Would recommend any particular brand? I presume Sony's will work well but also be pricey?

I have the same problem... but try as I might, I can't get mine to fast-dub, even to CD-R disks (x8).

I'm trying to dub a widescreen film that has been edited to remove the advert breaks.

It dubs quite happily at normal speed.

Any suggestions?

Elight are you doing a straight copy or are you changing the format so it has to do some re-encoding?
If it's got to change the format it won't do it at the fast speed

if you r record something to the HDD at say HSP quality then you must dub that recording to DVD at HSP which will dub at high speed, converting the recording when dubbing to DVD anything other than the original quality will force the recorder to re-encode the video and dub to DVD at 1x

I'm using Verbatim 6x DVD-RW's and Verbatim 16x DVD-R's for permenant backups, very fast at 16x

Yes, I mean DVD-Rs.... lol... although if I was using CD-Rs it would explain why things wern't working!

Thanks for your replies - I am reducing the quality from HQ to something that fits on DVD. So I now understand why it won't fast-dub for me.

My problem is that I record (virtually) everything at HQ... and then sometimes after watching a film think 'oh... I liked that... I'll stick it on a DVD to keep'.

I'll have to make-do with x1 dubbing.

honestly I can't differentiate between HQ/HSP and SP recording modes when recording from the internal freeview tuner, I have a sneaky suspicion that the sony directly records the MPEG2 stream from the freeview straight to the HDD in SP mode, anything higher like HSP and HQ scale up the bitrate of the recording higher than the original so no quality is lost.

I take the route that if I think I might won't to archive a recording to DVD then I'll record it a SP or HSP depending on programme length, and if it's something I just want to watch once and get rid of then i'll record it at HQ

also found a few bits in te D710 manual:

Page 80 under the notes in column 1:

High speed dubbing in not available for the following titles:

- Titles recorded in HQ+
- Titles that contain both main and sub sounds (except DVD-RW (VR mode))
- Titles recorded in mixed picture size (4:3 and 16:9 etc.) (except DVD-RW (VR mode))

I've just fiddled about with my 710 and noticed that some titles will fast dub - others won't. This is onto -RWs formatted as Video. (-RWs formatted as VR will always allow fast dub but my other players don't like the format)

I'm guessing the reason that some titles don't fast dub is 'cos of the mixed picture size. A good example is The Simpsons on Channel 4. This is broadcast in 4:3, but switches to 16:9 half way through for the ads. So - no fast dub option. I'm gonna try and splice out the ads and see if that helps...

I cut out the ads, and the continuity at the start and end - and Fast Dub becomes an option! woohoo!

How do you cut out the ads, is this using the playlist facility?

Also if I am dubbing from DVD+RW to HDD I seem to be only able to record at 1X. Is this due to the recorded broadcast having changing ratios aswell.

Use the A-B delete function to cut out the ads. (I think that's what it's called - someone will correct me) Doesn't always allow for fast-dubbing though.

Never tried dubbing from disk to hd - can't help. I'll try it out later...
