Just got off the forum poll thread because I had got giddy trying to recalculate all the crossed posts and I come here and my head spins even more!
Very, very clever to figure all this out. Wish no one was bottom but that's another thread! *Hops off thread* |

OK I'm trying to make this easier
![]() Bill (the lowest after the judges score) had to end up above Patsy and Anton, the only was they could do that was to have the same result so the minimum Patsy could get was 6 (5 from the judges and 1 from the public) so... Bill also scored 6 which means he got at least 5 points from the public thus making him top 3. James had to score at least 4 from the public. But, Will had to score lower than Patsy, as he had a lower judges score if he score 6 (the minimum Patsy could have had) he would have stayed in through viewer votes. Therefore, Darren had to score higher than Patsy and Will too. Colin and Zoe couldn't leave, even if they had the least votes because their judges scores made them safe. |

OMG what a lot of brainy boffins you lot are! You are making me dizzy!
All I can see is that patsy was in the last two for some reason. Given Antons fan base that is surprising. However he did get voted out in the last series in spite of his fan base. It must be that Patsy is not pleasing the viewers as she should be. Dont know why Will lost out to Bill and James. He did dance really well. Obviously his fan base must be small and Hanna has not built up a big fan base like the other ladies who have been there before. It would be good if we were told what the viewer vote was. Then you lot wouldnt have to scribble away all night |

I understand what you are trying to say but I'm not sure I agree with some of this.
My mistake - I meant to say "That means that if (for example) Patsy, James and Bill were all drawn at 6 points, then Patsy would be 2nd last with 6 points"I agree that Colin could have been in the bottom 3. As I said, he must be in the top 5, but if he's 5th from the top, then he's 3rd from the bottom. I agree that Bill must have scored at least 6 points in total. He got 1 point from the judges, so must have got at least 5 points from the audience. He must therefore be in the top _THREE_ audience places (not necessarily the top two). |

For what it's worth, here's a computer analysis of the ways the voting could have gone:
Code:
Votes: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Zoe 8 2 26 20 12 10 10 Colin 0 0 26 25 15 11 11 Patsy 54 32 2 0 0 0 0 Darren 0 0 26 25 15 11 11 Will 26 54 8 0 0 0 0 James 0 0 0 18 28 22 20 Bill 0 0 0 0 18 34 36 The big conclusion - there are very few scenarios where Patsy came better then 2nd last. With Will gone, that makes her near certain to be last this weak unless the voting pattern changes. Of course, it's clear there's usually a "near the bottom = more viewer votes" effect, so the pattern may well change tomorrow! |

Now that analysis, I find easy to understand. That data is presented in an excellent, instantly visual way. Thanks very much! And thanks to all our latent statisticians too - who knew sequin-counting included so much maths - a lesson to all our young uns here

I seem to remember last year Denise being given top placing by the judges to ensure her being kept in the competition.

Welcome SCD Dave - it's quite clear there are some very clever folk on this forum - and not just 14 year old girls as once was thought (not by me!)
But I prefer to dance and watch dance rather than analyse all the data!

Hmm... Well, having done those calculations for last week, I certainly didn't expect Bill to lose to Patsy! Nonetheless, here's this weeks' analysis.
Code:
Votes: 1 2 3 4 5 6 zoe 26 22 18 18 26 28 colin 16 23 22 21 26 30 darren 16 23 22 21 26 30 james 0 6 18 28 38 48 bill 80 40 16 2 0 0 patsy 0 24 42 48 22 2 |
