DVD Loopthrough
A quick question:
If I have a TV with only one RGB-enabled SCART, would it be possible to connect a DVD player to the Toppy via SCART, and then watch DVDs using the SCART output from the Toppy (assuming the unit was in standby)? If so, would there be any noticeable degradation in quality by using this method as opposed to plugging the DVD player in direct? Thanks! |

Nope, chaining devices like that is the usual way to connect multiple devices to a single TV scart. At home I have Philips streamium->PVR->DVDR->TV and all FOUR devices work with high quality RGB signals though this relies on the middle two being able to do "RGB loop through".

Spot on - thanks guys.
This somewhat makes those SCART splitting boxes redundant then, doesn't it? |

Cliff Actually I've just had a thought: what would happen in this scenario? I have my Toppy on, recording something, but I want to watch a DVD at the same time. Which signal would my TV then display from the Toppy's SCART output? Would I always have to have the Toppy switched to standby if I wanted to watch DVD? Thanks... |

ht_waynef,
In my setup PVR->DVDR->TV the PVR can be happily recording something while I play a DVD (cos the DVD is "closer" to the telly). The one thing that I can't do is use the DVDR to record off its analogue tuner while watching a PVR digital channel but I cannot for the life of me think why I'd EVER want to record analogue ever again so this is never a limitation. About the only time the DVDR "gets in the way" between me and watching the PVR is for the couple of minutes it is finalising a disc. During that operation I can only see the DVDR menu and the PVR signal remains "hidden". On the whole this isn't a great problem either though. Cliff |

One more thought - if I went PVR > DVD > TV , then this would require my DVD player to have RGB-enabled loopthrough, would it not?
Is there any way of finding out whether it does this? It is a cheapo Toshiba SD240E... |
