chocky909

was going to get one of these.

wondering if the silver or black model were any different regarding component quality. I can't quite decide on looks alone - I do think black might be coming back though...

ISTR that earlier models of the Black Panther seemed to differ, though not significantly, though that just might have been a slightly different Firmware version that was out of kilter with silver models being sold at the time. By now the only difference is what you see on the outside, the internals are the same.

I had a silver Toppy and replaced it with a Black Panther. It was a very early, possibly pre-production, model. It came in the box for the black satellite version as they hadn't printed up the TF5800 Black Panther boxes at the time. It performed exactly the same as the out-going silver one and hasn't missed a beat since.

Well, this is the Topfield forum so I assume you can make some basic eliminations...

Actually I shoulda made it clear I was talking about the TF5800 freeview PVR so it was a point worth making.

Anyway, thanks bumpkin - that was exactly the kind of reassurance I was after - I had read something around the time the Black Panther was released but it sounds like it's cool now so... Black it is

oh oh, for sure...
Love the panther. but don't forget to take the protective film off the front. When the LED lit up the front panel it looks just great.

Little black numbers are always smart and silver can blend in if that's what you've got to match with. But hold on, if you want something different, the new Polar White model is coming soon .................?

I like the black one but bought the silver... made the mistake of asking hubby his opinion and he said match the TV.

iPod-style white is so last year. Even iPods are coming in black now, and where Apple go, others follow - remember when everything was made of blue see-through plastic, a la iMac?

And in case you're thinking 'well, duh, of course I'm going to peel the film off', I didn't spot it on mine for a week

it's very well lined up with the panel - you'll only spot it from a few cm away & you'll have to gently drag your fingernail across the edge of the panel to get a corner you can pull away

I think pure matt black is beautiful - better than shiny, if a little hard to maintain.

I have a habit of peeling (without asking) other peoples' protective film off remote controls, displays etc. It just gets to me - what's the point of protecting something if you never take it off at some point - unless you're waiting for the value to increase. I can't help it, it's like popping bubble wrap to me.

I solved the problem by getting one of each. So just showing off really. . They cannot ever be used in the same room of course because of the remote being the same. The only internal difference with Toppys AFAIK is that some have Seagate HDs and some Samsung Spinpoints.
That film on the Black ones front is amazing took me three weeks to spot it.

Richard

PS Bumpkin is quite right the Panthers originally shipped with a different firmware that was never made available otherwise so they did have slightly differnt characteristics. If you buy one now they should all be on the same version;

If you did that round my place you would never get invited back. The height of bad manners if you ask me.

Interesting...any different in response time or 'quietness' between the 2 drives?

Match with the colour of your telly (the Toppy, not your car as someone appears to be suggesting). Black is the new silver, which was the new black but only after black was the new teak. *However*, I predict that white will be the new black and not black (see PS3, XBOX 360 and some of the pricier tellys). Topfield have announced a Polar edition coming soon...

The only difference is the Samsung seems near enough soundless; the Seagate I can occassionally hear but not enough to be a problem.

NB I happen to have a Silver Toppy with a Seagate and a Black Panther with a Samsung but that is just chance; i.e. not all silvers have a Seagate and vice versa.

Not two weeks but I was very disappointed that my new Toppy had a scratched display. I could hardly send it back as it was freebie. Delighted when, after a few minutes of anguish, I discovered that it was just a protective film and once removed the beautiful and pristine mirror finish was revealed.
