From c21media (23/11/2005):

The UK's biggest commercial broadcaster, ITV, has struck its first major mobile video deal – a long-term agreement with Hutchison-owned 3 that will see live streaming of some of its flagship programmes.

Beginning with the present series of I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, subscribers to the 3 service will have access to live 24-hour coverage of events in the reality show's Australian jungle setting.

Coronation Street and Emmerdale, ITV1's leading soap operas, are also being primed for inclusion, allowing fans who happen to be away from home at the time of broadcast to tune in via their mobiles.

ITV is currently reviewing plans for making other programmes available in the same way, with the company expected to accelerate its mobile strategy next year.

The deal struck with 3 means that the mobile network's 3.2 million UK subscribers will instantly have ITV content presented to them when accessing its video menu. Those wishing to tune into ITV programmes in this way will be charged 75p per minute.

The arrangement with 3 is a one-year contract but it is non-exclusive and the broadcaster is also making shows available in the same way via its own ITV Mobile portal, available via other networks operators.

If you choose to catch up with the happenings on Coronation Street via ITV's new streaming deal with 3 UK it'll cost £22.50 to view a single half hour episode!!!

Yes £22.50

Simple aritmetic 30 X 75p = £22.50.

Yikes!!!

Anyone daft enough to buy this service? Cheaper to get a Casio Pocket TV!!

Want to watch live streaming ITV programmes on your 3 mobile?

That option will soon be abailable from the 'Today on 3' menu thanks to a deal with ITV. Thankfully this is going to be a non-exclusive deal and other networks might offer similar coverage at a realistic cost.

I can't see why anyone would want to watch TV on their phone anyway, regardless of cost. The screen's much too small. As you say, better buy a pocket TV. (And presumably a battery DTT tuner after 2012!)

Not strictly true.

I've got a Vodaphone PAYG SIM to give their service a try (as it's free for a few months .... screw three!).

It should be perfectly watchable on my phone - Motorola E1000. I've got an episode of Futurama encoded to 3GP on there just now and it's perfectly watchable. But then, the E1000 does have a very good screen by phone standards .... it was one reason for getting it.

It'll all depend what the broadcast quality is like I reckon ..... hopefully find out this weekend.

Seems the me that Mobile TV services are just a licence to print money by the mobile phone and TV companies. I'm just going to wait for the pocket Freeview TV's due out in the next few years.

But if you look into it a little bit more, you will see that at the moment you can have tv on your mobile for a fiver a month, raising to a tenner at the end of January...
