Arlene, 62? Well, dancing does keep you young.
When I just used to dip into the show I got fed up with the typical bad judge/good judge scenario. However, watching it more it really is a case of Len and Bruno being positive and generally helpful and Craig and Arlene giving honest and very consructive criticism even when it is harsh. It is the audiences Pavolovian reaction to boo any 'negativity' that is starting to annoy me now. The only way anyone improves is to be given that sor of basic advice plus the general encouragement.
Two things seem to have changed slightly in the dynamics this year: 1) the quality of dancing is SO high that the judges are all getting more picky, even Len, BECAUSE the quality is so high and it IS getting to the point where corrections are coming down to spotting and slight timing and footwork errors, which is some praise to the celebs, and 2) I have a feeling that the judges were put into those good/bad roles to an extent by the Beeb producers and maybe the judges are a bit fed up with it. They are still in the same basic technical/feeling roles but they are not sticking to it as much as they used to and are being more 'honest'. How would you feel like as Criag havng to be the bad boy every week. He tells the truth every week because it is after all a competition but he is also giving honest praise more than he used to. A shame the audience can not actually applaude brilliant, constructive expert criticism form the best in the country. Any dancer would die to have their technique deconstructed by those people. Especially when the advice on such a detailed picky level which indicates you are a darn good dancer to have some pick up just those subtleties.
