My sister has just bought and moved into a new flat. the vendor had rented the flat out previously but it had been empty for a while before she moved in.

there is a fixed line telephone in the flat that has a ring tone, but it is not a BT line as she has called them to find out. How can we find out what network provider the phone line is with? She cant dial out of it so that won't work.

We have tried getting the vendor to find out from the previous tenants but that has hit a dead end.

All i can think of is to call all the phone providers until we get the right one, but there must be an easier way??

thanks

The problem though is that it is not a BT line - we dont know who the line is registered with, and we dont know the phone number either.

Can she therefore just ring up any company and get them to convert the line to them regardless?

She doesnt want to sign up to BT because of the £75 connection charge.

If there is a dial tone, like you say there is, try dialling 100 or 150 and see if anyone anwers. If so ask them who they are

Look on the box of the main connection point. Surely on the main conection point, there's either a little BT piper logo, ntl logo or Telewest logo?

Try ringing 17070 (the BT line test number for engineers). If it's a BT line, then it will ring and the "circuit number" (phone number) will be read out by the robotic woman at the end and you will get a number of options, although you should technically hang up after that.

Some BT lines which have been dormant for some time have be re-connected for outgoing calls to 112,999 and 17070, each line has a telephone number.

When, I mean convert a line, I meant that you call bulldog and they operate on BT's behalf, they offer services down a BT line because they don't have their own infrastructure, when using certain providers, you will be sent a bill from BT for line rental: £11.50 per month and the cost of phone calls(what you've used) every month from the alternative provider.

Bulldog now sends just one bill and they forward the line rental onto BT.

In the UK, BT,Telewest,NTL,White Cable,Kingston Communications (Channel isles and isle of man:Manx Telecom,Jersey Telecom and Cable and Wireless Guernsey) are the companies which offer residential telephone service down their own infrastructure.

Although, there are other companies such as Cable and Wireless and Thus which only offer services to businesses.

It will depend on whether the line is a business line or a residential line. Nothing to do with what 'mood' the advisor is in.

3 months in advance of what? The line being switched on?

There are 3 scenarios for residential connections and only 1 of those involves paying a deposit.

If the credit check returns okay then no deposit is required.

If the customer gets Pay and Call then no deposit is required either.

If a deposit is required then BT keep it for 12 months and refund it at the end of those 12 months plus interest.

If you are going to post at least try and make sure it the correct information instead of misleading people.

If you have never had a BT account before, Then you have to pay a deposit. So if you choose BT together option 1 , then about £35 is necessary. The deposit is for line rental and for the first three months, you are held by a contract otherwise they may ask for some more money.

With BT pay and call, you still need to pay a deposit as you still go through a credit check. Although it's a pre-pay service, it is possible to go below £0.00 by using BT chargecard or rental of a service such as Wanadoo Hometime dial up internet or BT surftime or even BT line rental and calling features as your liable for fees until you've canceled the services.

It isn't a deposit really. You pay for line rental in advance and calls in arrears. It's always been done that way.

It is dependant on situation, as I said before. A deposit is not always required. Stop typing rubbish

Rubbish once again. If the credit check says a deposit is required it will not be less than £50, it has nothing to do with the line rental option that you decide to have.

Rubbish yet again. Although you do go through a credit check you do not pay a deposit if you have Pay and Call. You pay, in advance, the equivalent of the line rental for the billing period you choose to have and £5 for calls.

At least you got 1 thing correct.

Getting back to the original question though as someone else suggested call 100. You should get through to the Operator/Customer Services for which ever company has the line & take it from there. You can usually dial 100 even if your phone has had restrictions placed on it ie outgoing calls

we had to pay £100 up front and told it would be refunded in 12 months ...........yeah it was but not in cheque or cash...... they deducted it from the next bills so i changed to another provider
