accessing Topfield 5800 directly from Linux (without NSLU2)

I'm considering a 5800, but I only have a Linux PC.

Am I going to be able to upload TAPs, and also new firmware, using only Linux?

I'm aware of the NSLU2 project, but I don't want to buy another piece of hardware: I just want to use my PC directly.

I've downloaded puppy, and it compiles and runs on my PC: it looks like I will be able to use this to upload TAPs using USB; is this right?

I don't see how I will be able to load new firmware, though. I have serial port software on the PC, of course, is uploading new firmware via serial easy to do (without using the Windows uploader software)?

Anyone had any success with any of this?

thanks much indeed for any comments.

Linux firmware updating is a work in progress at the moment; someone's just come up with a tool to do it on the Mac, and there's a beta tool for Linux.
