What's On TV - pathetic
This is part 2 of my rant against What's On TV. Back at Easter I vented frustration at the fact Sonia appeared on 3 consecutive issues of the magazine despite there being bigger (and more interesting) storylines going on.
This time, I'm yet again turning my attentions to their arse licking of EastEnders. Now I love EastEnders at the moment, however, I feel last week's issue of What's On TV again took the p*ss. It featured Dennis as the main cover feature and continued with a story on how Johnny threatens Sharon and Dennis jumps to her defence - sounded worthy enough of the front page when I read it... However, tonight's episode comes along and there's still no sign of this "storyline". Then, in the last ten minutes Johnny quietly tells Dennis to tell Sharon to keep her nose out of his family's business, Dennis goes home and slams a bottle on the table, Sharon brushes it off. YOU WHAT? That is the big storyline that dominated the front cover and was meant to draw in the viewers? My god! If they had to feature EastEnders (which is a pretty forgone conclusion) they could've picked basically any other storyline and it would've been more worthy! Even Darren's mobile phone got more screentime. Let alone the other soaps, who have at least had life changing events occuring - Jason's betrayal in Corrie or Alice's cancer in Emmerdale were a million time more relevant. But I suppose Nigel Harman (sex fantasy of every 15 year old EastEnders viewer) sells magazines - what a cheap world we live in. Anyway - rant over! But does anyone agree?

Totally agree. Im sick of EE being on almost every single issue. There are only about 3 more issues left this year including the double xmas issue and I bet all of them will be EE covers. Corrie only get about 4 covers a year if they are lucky, the other 47 go to EE - very unfair IMHO.

LOL, yes, I do agree, but it does sadly sell magazines. I didn't think the likes of What's On TV's target audience were the teen bracket, so are we to assume that housewives et all look at the mag and think "ooh, Dennis" and buy it? Seriously, shoot them all at dawn. You should buy the mag for its CONTENTS, not the friggin cover (unless the cover is pretty damn nifty for whatever reason, but this hardly applies to TV mags).
Inside Soap is just as bad, if not worse. The consensus seems to be, "what excuse can we use this week to stick either Dennis, Sharon, Kat, Alfie or the Mitchells on the front?" |

They want the magazine to sell as many copies as possible so with all the rumours about Dennis dieing I bet alot of people probly bought the magazine to find out if it was anything to do with that-so in that respect I don't blame them for having him on the cover. I think it's kinda misleading making it sound like a big storyline, but then I don't buy tv magazines so I don't really mind.

Ive yet to see any evidence to suggest a Corrie cover sells less magazines. Most people stick to the same TV guide I imagine and buy it week in week out regardless of the cover. And I heard that one of the magazines best selling covers was Ken and Deridre's wedding.

Inside Soap are the worst for sticking "news" stories on the front.
"Who is Alfie's new love?" "Will Alfie get back with Kat?" Sweet Jesus. I'd rather the cover was dedicated to Viv Windsor's latest pair of shoulder pads, or Betty Turpin getting a new hairdo. I don't get the sales pattern either. They don't stick Emmerdale (and Corrie to an extent) on the covers often enough to test that surely? But on the assumption EE DOES sell more covers, well what does it say about the people buying them? That they just like the cover, regardless of what's inside? Cause 50% of the the time the story is lame (like the example the first poster gave). |

INSIDE SOAP is the only weekly magazine - every week it does it's best to have spouilers otr news on the front- otherwise people will not buy it - it goes up against the 30p TV guide's so it has to have news on the front - otherwise why not just buy a guide for 30p!

Hollyoaks and the other smaller soaps like Family Affairs have never had the main cover story on soap mags afaik. The big 3 are the ones that get the covers, although Emmmerdale hardly ever gets the main story, and Corrie seems to get less and less covers all the time.
tv quick and tv choice have given corrie quite a few covers, certainly more than whats on tv. |

Hollyoaks and Family Affairs get on the cover of TV QUCIK AND HOLLYOAKS every now and than - not as the main but as a side story.

In fairness TV Quick and TV Choice have had Corrie on the cover quite a lot this year, maybe about 1 cover in 3 or 4, which is really good considering Whats on TV gives like 4 covers a year to Corrie and that new one TV Easy NEVER put Corrie on the cover. TV Times/Total tv guide/Radio times more often than not have non soap covers but when TV Times do give covers to Corrie and Emmerdale as well as EE when they do get a soap cover. |

EastEnders get's on all the covers becuase it's a better selling soap. More people might watch Corrie but the people who buy the mags - most of them watch and prefer EE. If Corrie got as much sales - don't you think they would have them on.. They don't care what storyline is the best - just that who will make and sell more magazines for them.

![]() That sounds about right, 1 in 4 covers for Corrie, which considering some magazines NEVER give Corrie a cover (TV Easy for example) is good |

I was thinking the same as the original poster last night.
They could have had Ruby/Johnny/July! and this week they have Kat/Alfie which we have had for about 3 years running. No coverage on the Sonia/Noami story! |

I'm not being funny but why advertise Corrie at the moment anyway its become a farce as it is....the shows lost its appeal so why flog a dead horse!
Eastenders had crept up so well its back on form and it deserves good media coverage and yes the old story of sex sells its simple and to be honest when it comes to Dennis Rickman most of us swoon and arent interested in the storyline just more Dennis scenes preferably sweating after a jog

The storyline you refer too being promoted is not down JUST to What's On TV. Eastenders PR put our the promotional materiel . We all know that yesterday is the start of Dennis's exit..the seeds being sown so if the magazines are given this as promotional info then you cant really blame them.

Thats a very good point indeed.....it has to be said the media do like Eastenders a lot more whether its celebrating their achievements or running them in the ground!
