I am really going off Corrie. A few years back characters had credibility and there was certain quality there which is now missing. Was reading the tv mag and see that Tracy is going to bed Charlie. Who cares? These days all it seems to be about is who's bonking who. And storylines as well as characters have ranged from unreal to total madness. We've had the long drawn out affair with Shelley and Charlie, the ridiculous storylines with Les and Cilla, Candice becoming Status Quo's hairstylist, Dev suddenly having 6 kids (how come they have never been mentioned before?), Claire suddenly becoming the next Deirdre Barlow 20 yrs too late and wanting to become a bus driver , Roy trying to invent a door contraption, Tracy acting damn right horrible for no reason, Liz suddenly bedding any pervert she finds.......I could go on. Characters such as Molly, Cilla, Digerie, Les, Kirk, Candice etc don't act like real people, more like pantomine characters.

I don't know what's happening but the producer Tony Wood needs to be changed fast before anymore damage is done to the show. Bring back quality!

For me 1996 was the worst Corrie year ever.

I'm a Corrie fan but it has been dreadful recently

I'm sorry but Danny being Mikes son, Dev's secret Kids and then all these characters we dont need just arriving and then the Axe Sunita and janice

When the hell does Steve Frost start the quicker the better

I stopped watching Corrie this year, I think it's become awful and the stories are absurb at the moment. I know they're trying to get back to their comic roots with Cilla and Les but it went too far. There are no stories I actually care about anymore, which is sad. I think Eileen is sorely wasted as a character too.

It hasn't been Corries best year, but I wouldn't say worst. There have been worse years than this one.

I don't think this has been Corrie's worst year, I can think of past years where the soap has been awful. I just think Corrie writers have experimented this year with storylines, it's been towards the more comedy side. I must admit some storylines have baffled me and annoyed me, but some have been great. I loved it when Ian McKellen came into the show, that was top quality acting. Another example is the Webster's, last year everyone disliked them - but now, I think there great! Sophie makes me laugh all the time.

Also I think EastEnders has improved quite a bit recently, so I can see that being a reason why Corrie has slightly fallen.

The soap should pick up now it's starting to come towards Christmas and I'm sure they'll have lots in store for next year..

Nope but I should.

In EE's so called slump it won tons of awards, so really that is a pathetic argument to bring up. Why don't you compare Corrie's storylines this year to those the year before?

The last episode I watched properly was the 29th July. I saw 2 since and was bored. I've watched regularly since 1978. My mum watched from Val Barlow's death in 1971 and her last was 25th September. It's been bad before but never this bad.

As for the awards, Corrie didn't deserve them. Emmerdale did. It's the only soap that has maintained a standard all these years while Corrie and EE try to out misery and sensationalise each other.

Tony Wood isn't a soap fan. He hates them. Last year he did wonders but this year he just gave up. There's also too many episodes and worse, extra episodes that aren't needed. Storylines drag on and on and on and go round in circles. Same characters get all the airtime (Tracy, Shelley, Sarah) year in, year out. I would have high hopes for Steve Frost turning it around after he worked wonders on Emmerdale after Kieran Roberts ruined it with lack of humour, misery (the same sort of stuff he did in Corrie and wanted to copy but they wouldn't let him like Peter and Tracy ripping off Kelly and Scott). However, now he's Executive Producer there's no chance.

And EE won the NTA even though it wasn't its best year - I'm a huge fan of EE and must admit i was surprised that they won it. I didn't think they deserved it either but I was still happy for them.

But it just goes to show, you can win awards even if you aren't the best...

Emmerdale has been consistent for the last few years but they miss out all the time.

To be fair - neither of those should have won it - Emmerdale deserved a gon that year.. And as for Hollyoaks being nominated and Family Affairs not

It can't be the worst year. True the last few months have been off but there have been some brilliant storylines this year. Killer Katy is one, Ray's death is another.

If this is the worst year then I can't imagine how fantastic the other 44 were.

The outgoing Executive Producer admitted that this year hasn't been the best for the show. It's seen better days but it hasn't all been bad. The main problem for me has been the reliance on comedy situations (the Peacock vs Maddox fight for example was possibly one of the most ridiculous things the show has done in recent years) and the unneeded amount of backdrop characters.

I agree with this 100%. Part of my decision to stop watching was after enjoying the 70s DVDs so much. Proper writing and characters. Everyone had something going on in their lives and they all interweaved with the rest. Natural humour in the writing not daft slapstick and forced we get nowadays. I have often said Emmerdale is what Corrie used to be. It has that fine balance of drama and humour (Seth's death being a perfect example), characters are more rounded and the writing is superb. Yes, it does some naff storylines (Bollywood anyone?) but because it's not that often, it can get away with being a little surreal from time to time. The Corrie bosses should watch the old eps to see how it should be done. It's disgraceful such brilliant long-term writers such as Peter Whalley and John Stevenson are churning out boring drivel after writing some of the best episodes in the show's history.

I remember this time last year someone predicted Corrie was gonna be bad this year. Guess he was right.

EDIT: Here it is.

Thanks for the link, Richard. Pity that prediction was due to a homophobic attitude. If he hadn't been moaning about Sean and wrote about something else, maybe less people would have attacked his views. He was right though. Just it wasn't down to Sean.
