Am I alone in thinking that the American Smooth isn't really a dance at all? At first I thought it was a dance-designed-by-committee, but it's not even that. All dances, from the frug, twist, and funky-penguin to LA and onwards to the strictest tempos and even morris dancing have two things in common. They have a rhythm and tempo to which they are danced, American smooth has no such thing. It can be performed to several other dance rhythms, but has none of its own. It is, in fact, nothing more than a bunch of rules to what would otherwise be completely freeform.
Tell me I'm wrong.
