New Unlocked Orange Handsets

I'm not sure if i'm stating the obvious here, but here goes:

I just bought myself a PAYG Orange Sanyo S750i. Orange haven't sent any Sim updates so i thought i'd try my Tesco Mobile Sime in the phone. It works! Is this the norm?

I always thought Orange phones came locked from the network.

Well the good news is that if the Tesco SIM (O2) works in the Orange phone, it's definitely not locked

However that's nothing to do with why you haven't received a SIM update from Orange; I think you should still receive Orange SIM updates even with an unlocked phone.

02 and orange phones normally are transferable in my experience well the last phone i saw from 02 accepted an orange sim any way.

When you lock a phone you can only lock it to one network. you can't lock it to say O2 and orange...

They must just not have locked it.

In my experience, old BT Cellnet phones were never locked and you could put any sim in them.

I think that all the phones are unlocked in the box and as soon as that orange sim is put in and the updates arrive thats when the handset gets locked.

May not be but seems a little odd how my sim went in with no hassle, and worked.

Clearly one that got away! Your very lucky Orange phones are all locked normally.

In reply to another thread I dont have a S750i but I would be interested in your comments on it. Does it have a cut down version of Windows Mobile 2003SE?

DON'T DO IT!!!! Mines going back tonight. The phone is not too bad, but I think it has issues.

I'm not sure if it is my Orange USIM or the phone, but i am not waiting 14days to find out.

The looks of the p[hone aren't bad but the cheapness you after a few hours of ownership it something that you can't ignore. The software is quite simple and pleasing to look at, but the basicness of it becomes apparent after a few plays.

I can understand the Windows Mobile commentm, the icons do look familiar to my old Pocket PC particularly the games one. My guess would be that it isn't anything to do with Microsoft.

The phone has a lot of features but it soon becomes apparent that they are not really the best they could be. This said the megapixel camera is good.

I am tempted to not recommend this phone, but looking at what else i might replace it with in the same price range at orange i'm starting to convince myself.

(It's going sorry sanyo, your sync software is a pain to set up too - the last straw)

Think of yourself as lucky. The bloke at the Orange shop said there were alot of complaints about this phone and it had "known problems"

Why sell it? So much for quality assurance ISO9001 eh?

My bigest wory is that i gave them a PAC Code. I've asked them to cancel it, but so far they haven't impressed.

Orange used to have a rather stringent quality control for phones at their procurement department. Things changed when France Telecom took over.

Hope things work out ok.

I'm going for the Z107 off orange's website. Hopefully I'll have more luck with this one. Any experiences with the Z107?

No, it runs a prprietary OS but they have tried to emulate the look and feel of a windows device to make it intuitive.

Just had a look at my old Pocket PC and that Games Icon on the sanyo is Identical. How did microsoft let them get away with that!?

Has anyone else tried putting another operators sim into their orange handset before the sim updates are sent. Not that i'm promoting this. Nor do I accept any responsibility for problems this may cause.

(Nor am I suggesting that DS promote this or accept responsibility) what i mean is do it at your own risk and expense for experimental purposes. I don't even know if doing this is wrong. Anybody have any knowledge on this subject?

If the phone is purchsed direct from orange,it will probably be locked,if you bought an orange phone from another source then they can be left unlocked.

This applies to some other networks also.

I bought the phone from the Orange Shop, direct from Orange retail. This is what seems to confuse me...

I know that when you buy a handset from Carphone Warehouse, they are usually unlocked which is why they usually are quite reluctant to price match against other highstreet stores.

If they're not claiming that the operating system is affiliated with Microsoft then they can get away with making things look the same iconwise unless MS copyright their icons which I assume they only have for the big programs like Word and IE where the icons bevome the trademarks as well.

SIM updates have no effect on the network locking whatsoever, they do exactly what they say on the tin; update the SIM. The locking process is done as a software/firmware modification before the phone is put in the box. Chances are, the phone you got, they forgot to do it at the factory.
