New Unlocked Orange Handsets
I'm not sure if i'm stating the obvious here, but here goes:
I just bought myself a PAYG Orange Sanyo S750i. Orange haven't sent any Sim updates so i thought i'd try my Tesco Mobile Sime in the phone. It works! Is this the norm? I always thought Orange phones came locked from the network. |

Well the good news is that if the Tesco SIM (O2) works in the Orange phone, it's definitely not locked
![]() However that's nothing to do with why you haven't received a SIM update from Orange; I think you should still receive Orange SIM updates even with an unlocked phone. |

When you lock a phone you can only lock it to one network. you can't lock it to say O2 and orange...
They must just not have locked it. |

I think that all the phones are unlocked in the box and as soon as that orange sim is put in and the updates arrive thats when the handset gets locked. May not be but seems a little odd how my sim went in with no hassle, and worked. |

Does it have a cut down version of Windows Mobile 2003SE? |

I'm not sure if it is my Orange USIM or the phone, but i am not waiting 14days to find out. The looks of the p[hone aren't bad but the cheapness you after a few hours of ownership it something that you can't ignore. The software is quite simple and pleasing to look at, but the basicness of it becomes apparent after a few plays. I can understand the Windows Mobile commentm, the icons do look familiar to my old Pocket PC particularly the games one. My guess would be that it isn't anything to do with Microsoft. The phone has a lot of features but it soon becomes apparent that they are not really the best they could be. This said the megapixel camera is good. I am tempted to not recommend this phone, but looking at what else i might replace it with in the same price range at orange i'm starting to convince myself. (It's going sorry sanyo, your sync software is a pain to set up too - the last straw) |

Why sell it? So much for quality assurance ISO9001 eh? My bigest wory is that i gave them a PAC Code. I've asked them to cancel it, but so far they haven't impressed. |

![]() Has anyone else tried putting another operators sim into their orange handset before the sim updates are sent. Not that i'm promoting this. Nor do I accept any responsibility for problems this may cause. (Nor am I suggesting that DS promote this or accept responsibility) what i mean is do it at your own risk and expense for experimental purposes. I don't even know if doing this is wrong. Anybody have any knowledge on this subject? |

I know that when you buy a handset from Carphone Warehouse, they are usually unlocked which is why they usually are quite reluctant to price match against other highstreet stores. |

Nor do I accept any responsibility for problems this may cause. SIM updates have no effect on the network locking whatsoever, they do exactly what they say on the tin; update the SIM. The locking process is done as a software/firmware modification before the phone is put in the box. Chances are, the phone you got, they forgot to do it at the factory. |
