Here's something I have written conveying the aspects that I enjoy about Strictly Come Dancing based upon Bill and Karen's departure on Saturday as the basis for my perspective. Please feel free to contribute your thoughts.

The Heart and Soul of Strictly Come Dancing

It surprised me yesterday to learn that Bill and Karen were leaving SCD. When I think of them, I will reflect upon those seven weeks of their exploits that have passed and have suddenly driven to a halt. A colourful journey that involved comedy, drama and pathos. And that was before this fine duo even stepped onto the dancefloor.

Personally, I do not think that Bill Turnbull has two left feet. Regardless of his injury, what he lacked in technique, he made up for with his spirited display, desire to participate and sheer determination to see things through. Some might take exception to his verbal sparring with the judges. I found that it added to SCD's entertainment, rather than diminished it. Although he is a celebrity, Bill in some ways, made this experience more accessible to the viewer because, to an extent, the experience can be lived through him. He is respected in his work, is a family man, has had ups and downs with his confidence in dance training yet has time to enjoy his hobbies. They are facets of his personality that provide a source of audience empathy.

An aspect of his life that stood out in particular, thanks to BBC editing, is how he cultivates affectionate relationship with his harem of wives: Ceci, his real life wife, Sian his breakfast wife and, of course, Karen, his dancing wife. Maybe I'm a gullible victim of the BBC editing process, but from the footage and the live programmes I've seen, I do believe that Bill and Karen stand out as a couple. There is something about them, a chemistry that lit up the screen from the first time that I saw them. And there was something genuinely enchanting about how this relationship translated so luminiscently and successfully onto the dancefloor.

Talking about lighting up the screen, there's Karen. From barely knowing her name prior to the series, I now understand what others had already known - that Karen Hardy is a wonderful ambassador for the world of ballroom dancing, bringing to this programme her vibrant imagination, nuanced creativity and infectious enthusiasm. From the evidence that we are permitted to observe through edited video footage, she has coped admirably with Bill's tougher times as well as forming a partnership that promotes the fun aspect of dance - the joy of two people coming together as one on the dancefloor. And sometimes they even freestyle - See Bill's Viennese Waltz.

Karen's routines have left a number of visual imprints, a veritable gallery of images firmly etched into my memory. A world where hats are exchanged freely, rings are offered theatrically and waltzes turn triumphantly. There was a story being told in each one of the routines and I felt that their semblance of magic and mischief was what set Karen's routines apart from the others. They were infused with graceful levity, playful interplay and passionate artistry. It makes you wonder that if Karen should choose to return for another series, how much of a priviledge and a pleasure it would be for us to witness her working her magic with another male celebrity.

For those of us who have felt some sense of loss at Bill and Karen's departure, or indeed other cherished couples, it perfectly illustrates how much time and energy is invested into those two minutes of dance. The viewers make an emotional investment - "You're my favourites" - eagerly awaiting the emergence of the couples walking down the staircase each week, anticipating their next dance. The celebrities mould their lives around this intensive experience. And you also come to realise how much the professionals invest in this - with their pride and livelihood at stake. I was touched that Karen had even prepared a farewell note for Tess to express how much this experience had meant to her. That she had prepared herself for the eventuality of having to leave the dancefloor was an emotional reminder that the SCD experience touches lives at a human level. It has already touched lives at a personal level because watching SCD inspired viewers to take up dancing. Myself included. And I am sure that there are plenty of others too.

What I enjoyed most about Bill and Karen was that as a couple, they are both endearingly down-to-earth. Yet they imbued the ordinary with a sense of the extraordinary. Here was a man who tested his physical limitations to their fullest extent and was willing to go the distance. He was partnered by a fantastic and gifted teacher with an eye for detail, worked harmoniously with her student and drew out the best performance possible from his skill set. I will miss them both, but I feel better for somehow getting to know them - even if it is just from the television screen.

For now, there will be other dances, other dancers and a grand finale to look forward to. But there will only one Bill and one Karen, who in their own special way, have proudly embodied the very heart and soul of Strictly Come Dancing.

Thanks for reading.

How wonderfully expressive.

As you have, rightly, pointed out, Bill captured the spirit of SCD, in that he was taken from a familiar situation, freely admitting he couldn't really dance, and placed in one where he experienced something entirely new.

Over the weeks, we, the viewers, have warmed to him. We sympathised with his attempts to master new skills & his weekly mauling from the judges. Worried about his well-being; after his injury, &, certainly in my case, came to see him in a new light (no longer just a face reading the news, but as a person).

His relationship with Karen has been one of the delights of this series. It isn't often we are priviledged to see a friendship developing over time, in the way that we did with Bill & Karen.

Karen showed herself to be, not only, a great dancer, choreographer & teacher, but a caring individual who fretted over Bill as one would over a member of one's own family.

Deep down I must admit that I always knew that, given the strength of the field this series, it would prove impossible for them to win the competition, but, in some respects, they have, perhaps, gained some things that are even more valuable: the fond regard & affection of a large part of the populace & their friendship.

One of my lasting memories of this series of SCD will be the way in which, despite having to endure the pain of leaving the competition, on Saturday, they managed to do so with a dignity that has been lacking from some competitors in the past.

I'd just stopped crying, I've just read your lovely piece estilolibre and I'm off again...

Every word echoed in this corner. Thanks Bill and Karen. You guys are wonderful. There's a lot of love on this forum for you both. You exemplified an 'ordinary' couple for the viewers. But your courage, tenacity, determination , humour and spirit were extraordinary. It was a privilege having you both on the show. Thank you very very much.

Bill, your charm and humour never failed, you always worked so hard, you were fabulous. You did a cheeky cha cha, a spirited quickstep, in which you kept up brilliantly, I loved your tango, you put everything you had in the Paso, your VW was the best of the night, and what a sexy rumba with great footwork! and a lovely waltz, all with an awful injury. I think you can be very proud of what you achieved and can hold your head up high. You didn't win, you've won a better prize, a place in our hearts and there can be no greater tribute.

I think you may be remembered longer than the winner of this series.

Me too!

Estilolbre, you have perfectly conveyed all that I have been thinking about SCD and Bill and Karen's departure. Although I had prepared myself for the worst this Saturday it was still a horrible shock and I certainly shed a few tears at Karen's reaction to Bill's wonderful words at the end.

In reflecting on the rest of the SCD series I have say that it will just not be the same without these two. They weren't the best couple, but the spirit in which they participated was inspirational (no "can't do" attitude whatever befell them) and their performances always brought a smile. Although I generally hate the defeatist expression "it's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts" - I think it is quite apt in this sense.

Drat, that's the last tissue......

Just echoing the above comments, they may not have been the people I wanted to win, but I loved every single second of Bill and Karen on SCD. The show, and the viewing public, will miss them. Thanks to both of them for brightening my Saturday nights

How true. Bill has been an absolute asset to this series and should be remembered as a true Strictly hero. Karen is an amazing inspiration and the magic and warmth she has brought to all of us has been unbelievable. THEY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

This thread is the best analysis of why we love SCD. Bill and Karen ARE SCD 2005. Karen has worked wonders with Bill, if Bill's self deprecation is to be believed, though I suspect the effort and time he has spent on SCD is because Karen has made the experience so enjoyable for him.

Their partnership is the stuff Hollywood movies used to be made of. Romantic trial and tribulations all wrapped up in the most innocent and genuine of emotions. Be it affection for each other or just a plain love of ballroom dancing. Nothing seedy or untoward, just two people having fun together, Great Stuff..

Thought I was coming to terms with their departure till I read this thread...
It's made me wonder about the point of SCD though. Should it be about who is the best dancer, or who progresses the most. Zoe and Colin have consistently been in top two with judges and either will probably win, yet it comes naturally to them. Not so for Bill, (or Darren at first) but Bill and Karen were so entertaining to watch, and looking through the boards, seem to have inspired more devotion than any other couple. So when Arlene says to Bill you should be in this competition any more, it makes my blood boil! I'll bet more men will be inclined to take to the floor because of Bill, he's an inspiration. I will miss them both so much, SCD just won't be the same.

Thank you all for your kind words. I'm pleased that you have taken the time to read my post. And I like the discussion it has generated.

I didn't realise that it was going to cause some to shed tears though! I'd pass along some hankies, but PeachUK has already beaten me to it!

A very eloquent post, Estilolibre. You have summed up what a lot of people are thinking. Thank you.

I think that Karen came across as the sister I would love to have! She is fun, warm, hard working and totally loyal. I will miss her on a Saturday night (and on the ITT visits). I shed tears with her too on Saturday.

Please come back next year Karen!

Wow, indeed pipie. In fact, it was your comments about Bill and Karen that inspired this thread.

Originally I was going to reply to your point in the "My Life is Over ..." thread, but then realised that what I was writing merited its own discussion.

Thank you gillypand and everyone else again - I appreciate your kind words.

Thank you Estilo for your eloquent post and everyone for their replies.

As a prolific poster on this forum about the magic of Bill and Karen I felt I really should post something profound to mark their departure especially on the B&K Appreciation Thread but I've found myself quite lost for words. There's really only been a handful of us on this forum consistently posting on the Bill and Karen Appreciation threads so I'm quite moved by the outpouring of support for them now they're out of the show.

What can I add? Perhaps only my personal experience of B&K, what little it is. I've been non-existent on the forum this weekend. I had the chance to appear with the famous four coming to your screens tomorrow night but couldn't because I also had the incredible fortune of being able to watch Saturday's show from the viewing gallery in Studio 1. It was a difficult choice but I feel overwhelmingly privileged that I saw my favourite pair dance live and that I could witness their vivacity and genuine affection off-camera.

Seeing as we're sharing the Bill and Karen love, one heartwarming moment I saw on Saturday which I would like to share was when, just before they walked out to descend the staircases at the beginning of the show and off camera Bill and Karen were waving, giggling and blowing kisses to each other for good luck across the top of Laurie Holloway! Everyone in the gallery were giggling along with them and it infused us all with a sense of fun before the show began.

The bond between them as a SCD couple appeared to extend to their families as well - at the end of the show both their families came together in amongst the milieu of random people on the dancefloor and made a little huddle to hug, shake hands and chat. They didn't look morose - they looked happy and proud. And so they should be! I'm sure the support of Bill's wife, Sesi Turnbull and his children and Karen's husband Conrad Murray and their baby has been the foundation of the strength B&K drew on in order to endure some ruthless criticism, lack of acknowledgement for their successes, judges unmoved by clever, sassy, innovative and entertaining choreography and of course, f-gate!

Well, I thought I was lost for words but..hmmm...seems I found a few! I'm looking forward to seeing them again on the final show. Personally I would love to see them samba so I think they should prepare as usual and appear as the featured dancers - it would be pure Bill and Karen Bliss!

Gotta go, will catch up later
