Children In Need may be getting a percentage of the phone call costs, but you can't seriously imagine that these people are giving up all this time and putting in all this effort AND giving the BBC a prime time Saturday hit without being paid. Let me assure you that they are being paid, and handsomely too.

Not entirely true. Sometimes performers have other commitments that require them to take time off and miss a show or two. Certainly, to rehearse for SCD as well as performing in a Panto would be an incredibly punishing schedule. That's more likely to be the real reason. As to the understudy only going on due to the illness of the lead, well I remember an understudy going on because the lead took a week off the show to get married!
