Just popped into Asda to find they have a large display of SONY KV28HX15 WEGA 28" FLAT Widescreen TV's in the foyer, on a Rollback promotion to £229.

Couldnt believe my eyes when I saw the price, I think i might get one... have you guys had any dealings with this model? Any advice?

Its not that cheap.
Its not freeview for starters.
A quick (I mean very quick) search on the web came up with £240 for the same model.

Maybe doesn't seem cheap to some, given the deals that are around just now, but its virtually identical to the set we purchased 3 years ago for £800! I've dealt with shed loads of Sony TV's over the years (and other brands too) and to my mind this set is nothing but a bargain. I have looked at it closely recently and the picture is typical Sony (brilliant) and the sound is even quite good (a bit of a weak spot on some Sony TV's).

I doubt you'd be dissapointed.

Well, went in and bought one and im not disappointed!

Picture: 10/10
Sound 9/10
Build Quality 10/10
Remote: Basic but well designed, 8/10

Value for Money? Yes definately! 10/10

A very good set which would have cost over £500 just 18 months ago - ideal to buy if you are waiting for the HD TV prices to come down to a realistic price, plus they will only improve over time, as CRT's have!

Get to Asda and buy one of these!

Scoobie... did you get free delivery for £240 and did it include VAT? Doubt it would be free delivery, even so, its still £10 in your back pocket!

It's also on the Argos website for £229.99 (though out of stock).

Hope you enjoy owning it, and that its as good to you as all mine have been over the years. You'll end up "finding" an elderly aunt or something that "really needs a TV" in years to come, just so you can give it away and buy the latest one. My first Sony set was given away, and it still works! Its got to be 15-18 years old by now - and the picture is still reasonably good.

Hi, I have one of the Sony KV28HX15's, which I bought back in June for £350 from Comet. The picture is truely amazing - never seen a TV with such a superb picture to this, the same goes for the sound - the bass response and clarity is awesome.

Pitty the TV developed a fault back in October - the tube has started buzzing and ringing. Sat down to watch TV one night, and noticed there was strange sounds coming from the set. I stuck my head infront of the glass, and you could hear it's coming from inside the CRT tube.

Still haven't got round to ringing Comet. Only problem is that it doesn't always do it - some nights you can stick the TV on, and it works fine, then other nights' hell is the tube noisy - buzzing and ringing all the time. It's spoilt what was a good TV.

Not sure whether to call Comet or not, as if they send out an engineer and the TV is working ok at the time they come round, then I'm going to be scuppered, as they won't believe me.

markelliot, my old Hitachi had these symptons when it was new. When the guy came out it never did it but luckily our VCR had a fault and the same guy came for that. When he was here the TV made its buzzing noise, he said it was the HT coils and got the set replaced. The set is still working okay but I need a reason for a new one.Now over 8 years old.

Good job I came across this thread - http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/...d.php?t=137127.

Did they give you a new TV, or did they repair it? Also, what does the 'HT' bit stand for? As you said 'HT coils'.

I got a new set which then developed a small fault (Soon fixed). I think HT stands for High Tension, the wires that goto the tube but don't quote me. How wide is the Sony as anything over 840mm is too wide for the space.

Here goes, I'm a bit rusty so no guarantees given for absolute technical accuracy.

On the main board, there is a component known as the flyback tranformer - this converts the low tension (lowish voltage maybe 15v or so) voltage that runs around the circuit board into high tension (HT which can be 30,000v or more) which it then sends up a cable, the end of which is stuck to the top of the tube (looks a bit like a rubber suction pad). Basically, the cathode ray scans the picture from top to bottom, and when it gets to the bottom the HT cap releases its voltage in order to bring the beam back to the start - hence the name flyback.

The use of a coil to increase the voltage from LT to HT is fairly similar to the process that happens in a petrol car engine, with the HT cap being the spark plug end.

If there is a fault with the transformer, or with the cap it can cause a singing or fizzling noise - sometimes they will fizzle for a while, give a crack and go quiet for the rest of the day. There are other components that can sing or whistle such as capacitors, so there are a few variables.

If the set is under guarantee, make the phone call. Even if the engineer can't find the problem, ou have logged the fact that you have experienced a fault. It may need your TV to be taken away and soak tested to show the fault to the engineer, but it is worth getting the ball rolling while you have the warranty. Sony were always very fair with things like this, I've known them to replace sets that are no longer under warranty because of a recurring intermittent fault.

Thanks to both of you for that, much appreciated.

I will phone Comet about the problem, but not until after Christmas - I don't want to be without a TV over the Christmas period. I'll phone them at the beginning of January, which is fine because it's guarranteed until the end of June.

The TV is a 28". Not sure what you mean by size (where abouts to measure), but here is a picture of it - http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9937/image15qr.jpg.
