no, you can't send anonymous messages on any UK network to my knowledge, you certainly an't on Orange. The message will be rejected by the SMSC if it doesn't find a valid number/company shortcode on it. You coul dpossibly send from one of the services online that let you send free texts but most of those seem to require a valid phone number. You could always get one of the free SIMs that the networks give away regularly if you need a disposable number.

I should probably add if you're intending to do something to harass someone, bear in mind this is a criminal offence and the mobile networks can, in theory, pass your details onto the police if you're found to be engaging in such an activity. Not saying you will do but anybody else reading this thread could do if they were that way inclined.

There are websites on the Internet where you can send a text message to any mobile. Here's one: http://www.cbfsms.com
(No originating number required)

My Nokia 7600 has an option for "send my caller ID", which you can enable/disable. Isn't that what you're after?

Thanks for all the replies. I did try turning of the caller ID but that does not work for a text message. Basically a friend was rather stupid last night and gave his number out, so we wanted to send him a wind up message. He would easily know who it was as we would be laughing that much.

for a laugh I once downloaded some message software that alows you set the sender ID. Its meant for clubs to put their name in, but you can add a real phone number as well. its at www.text160.com

If you put in a number from thats on someones phone, when the receiving mobile gets the message it thinks its from the phonebook number (when its really from us!!)

Its good for some windups..as when they reply it goes back to the person whos number it is. We set up someone to reply to a 'date' when they hadnt been texted by who they thought...he got a date out of it so saw the funny side.

probably not what its intended for, but hey.
