Virtual surround sound
I have a panasonic dvd recorder dmr-es20deb. I would like to have what is I presume Virtual surround sound as I hope this will reduce the number of speakers to a subwoofer and two speakers. If anyone has any guidence I would be very grateful.

Such systems 'work' by bouncing the sound for the rear channels off the side walls. So for best results you want the TV in the middle of a short wall and your viewing position directly in line with the TV. You can't put the speakers too far away from the TV or you'll lose the virtual centre speaker effect.
I'm sure proper 5.1 surround sound is better but if you want better sound than your TV offers and want to avoid speakers and cables everywhere a 2.1 virtual system is better than nothing. I bought one about 3 years back that is also a DVD/CD player and (rarely used) radio. Mrs S was skeptical at first but when I agreed that the towering stereo could move out of the lounge and she heard the sound she agreed that it was an improvement. |

Well, there's the Bose 3.2.1 range (3 cables, 2 speakers, 1 sub-woofer). There seem to be 3 models in the range depending on how small you want your speakers and whether you want a hard drive too.
and the Sony DAV-X1 which I saw in the Sony Centre recently. Both are also DVD/CD players so may have functionality you don't need. I don't think I've ever seen a 2.1 system that's just speakers and amp. |
