Problem with LG DV4912 DVD Recorder

Hi folks,

I've had my LG DVD recorder for about 14 months now and it has been performing fine however since moving to Spain, where the dust is absolutely abysmal, the recording process regularly screws up.

I have tried DVD lens cleaners (with the little brushes on) but this has not worked. Now it wont even format new discs correctly.

I am loathe to take it to be repaired as I guess the cost is going to be high.

Today I took it apart and found that the DVD unit is really just an IDE unit from a PC.

Anyone kow if I can safely just replace this with a new unit and will the Recorder control the DVD unit coorectly in the absence of Windows type drivers?

Hope someone out there can help me.
