Hi - I just bought a Bush 28" widescreen TV (Model WS6680SIL) secondhand. The seller showed it to me and the picture seemed fine. I got it home (carefully) and on switching on there is a problem. There are purple and green areas in the corners of the screens and all the flesh tones are bright green. All the colours are wrong as if one of the primary colours isn't working.

Does anyone have any ideas please or am I destined to:
1. visit the TV repair shop
2. cut my losses and throw it away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Sounds like it needs 'degaussing' , see here.

Hope this helps

OOps - I should have read the article first before I said I'd try it. Does anyone know if 'degaussing' can be achieved on this model if it isn't doing it itself on startup?

It's in the corners witout a signal. When the scart is connected it is the entire picture. The background to sky+ is bright red, all skin tones are bright green and there are lots of purples across the screen. Every colour is wrong except whites look white. When I switch on it makes that familiar 'crackling' noise which I assumed was the degaussing, but the wrong colours do not clear

Do you have the Sky box set to RGB? Maybe either the RGB input on the TV is cream crackered or the SCART is missing one of the R, G or B connections. Or the SCART lead isn't seated properly, it is not unusual for the weight of the cable to pull the plugs out slightly, which would be more noticable with RGB.

If making sure the SCART plugs are fully pushed home doesn't cure the fault try setting the Sky box and TV to Composite (may be called PAL or CVBS) and see if that makes the colours OK again. Then try S-Video and see if that is also OK. If both these modes are OK but RGB is still faulty then next step is to try a different SCART lead if you have one.

Tried all that including different scart lead - still the same. Put different TV to Sky box via scart and all okay. Looks like the TV is duff - thanks everyone.

I read (on here i think) that if you unplug the tv overnight and plug it in the next day it should de-gause it.

I tried it on an old tv we had but it didnt work, in the end i got a magnet and spent a few minutes sorting the screen out the easy way

So is it possible with a magnet? - I take you you move it across in front of the screen.

I've also done this in the past. In the absense of a real degaussing magnet

Well, officially you move the magnet around in a circular motion gradually moving away from the screen....but, with a bit of playing around you can achieve a good result...you've got nothing to lose by the sounds of it

Good luck

Dismantled some old tower speakers with 12" drivers and strong magnets. Placing near screen had a remarkable effect - i'ts possible in certain areas to get perfect colours - but not an even spread across the screen. e.g. blue head, green hands and everything in between perfect! I guess the degaussing circuit must have packed in. I'll play for an hour and see how I go on. Thanks everyone for your suggestions - you can always rely on these forums (or should that be Fora) for assistance.

From what i remember to degauss you start at the back of the screen and move away slowly in a circular motion then quickly move the magnet out of range. Stupid question but have you any unshielded speakers close by that could be causing the effect in the first place?
