How much is one worth ?
geo-nomad

I know the Thomson is a bit old now and from reading here seems a bit unreliable, but would it be worth buying one for £75, they've got an ex-display one in Comet ?

For £75 I'd buy another at the drop of a hat! Compare vs. standard STB for £40 - what's another £35 for twin tuners, pausing live TV, 20 hours of recording.

Just my opinion though!

I would but my experiences have been "coloured" of late...

Thomson "ex-display"? From Comet?

You need to read this thread:

Yes,. thanks, I'd already noticed this, that's what got me a bit concerned, I might get them to show me it working first.... can't decide, thanks for the feedback though, BTW osteo66, what has 'coloured' your view ?

Hi geo-nomad, I thought I'd suffered a HDD failure (thread "possible HDD failure?") but previously I've had a tuner go down after about 4 months, and then an irritating experience with Thomson repair centre when they forgot to reset a pin number on what I presume was an exchange unit. To be fair to the PVR I really like it WHEN it works properly!! I have to admit though that I'm becoming less confident in its' reliability although I may have been unlucky as Musukebba pointed out....

Hi Geo-Nomad.....

If you can get a Thomson from Comet (like me) for £75, then go for it. I see you saw my other thread, where I kept getting duff units from Comet - However, looks like I have one that works.

Just get them to plug it in and show you it working first. Maybe get them to leave it on for 10 mins or so to see if it crashes.

At least you can always return to Comet for a refund or replacement.

There are enough places to get a replacement remote from. I got one for £20 from avuk.co.uk and received it in 2 days. You won't be able to do much without a remote.

If they don't have the manual, Thomson have it in PDF on their website.

At the end of the day £75 is a good price. They even go for up to £160 on eBay for used ones!!!

Good luck...

Don't get me wrong, the DHD4000 is a fine DVR, but it seems to have incredible resale value. I've been keeping an eye on eBay recently, and I saw one go for £155, with the average price being over £125. And some of these second-hand Thomsons were out of warranty, without their original boxes etc.

You can get a brand new Fusion 100 for less than that! Not quite as good as a DHD4000, IMO, but not far off, and you can get more recent models for not that much more. All seems very strange to me.

What one of these new ones from Aldi - £99 available as from today.

The Aldi one, like seemingly all of the wave of el cheapo DVRs coming on to the market lately, appears to be severely limited. You can't record two things at once even though it apparently has two tuners, it doesn't buffer live TV until you press pause, etc. Some of the other boxes have ridiculous limitations like only 6 timer slots. Read the threads about them and see if you still want one.

Spot on. The more I see of these cheap alternatives, the more I realise what a great piece of kit the Thomson is.

Even "limitations" such as the 4TV EPG now appear to be plus points (see the Humax 9200-T), rather than negatives for the Thomson.

As pointed out in another thread, if Thomson could simply put out the same box with a) quieter fan and b) larger disk they should clean up with it!

Are you certain it was showing "In Stock"? When did you look? It has always been showing "Ordered on Request" whenever I have looked and QED told me it had been discontinued when I enquired. Although I see some one received one recently, see post following yours.

I ordered one from QED on Saturday and it was delivered on Tuesday!!!!

Had a few probs with is crashing every 5 minutes, hopefully it will sort itself out. We'll see.

These units are still going on ebay for £140 second hand. Crazy when you can pick one up brand new for £135.00

I saw one on the shelf at Comet in the Freeport Designer village near Braintree, Essex for £99 (cos it was "end of line"). So if anyone is near there and wants a bargain I'd move quickly!

I got one from QED a couple of days ago and it crashed every 5 minutes or so too, with random lights on the front. I left it to download the EPG last night and it ran for half an hour before work this morning without crashing. I looked this morning and they're now £147 ordered on request at QED.

Did yours ever sort itself out?

Re: resale value

I bought a bose wave radio/cd five years ago for £350, and sold it on ebay recently for £260.

Might get rid of the thomson if they're going for 150-notes!

The recently discovered 'engineers menu' (2846 from the technical help screen) has a 'reset PIN' option that would probably have cured this.

Hmm....didn't put two and two together there - good point Trevor!

All OK with the (new) replacement and I avoid pin numbers now .....and it seems far more stable on 0.31 s/w than 1.7.7
