I wonder how it would be if there was no BB coverage/opinion from RI:SE, Moyles and Mr Norton? (or this Forum)

These are all potent influences
Still think Kate should win though (just my opinion mind you)

Interesting thread for discussion, thank you ...

The media certainly exerts a powerful subconscious influence on public perception. Jade's redemption from "evil bitch" to "not-so-bad-really" is an example.

1. Printed media
Tabloids and magazines have one goal - to push up sales. To do this they focus on those likely to help them do this. Between the two of them, Jade and Alex have generated the most headlines (many of them front page). No surprise - editors want someone able to provide memorable headlines, eg. I won't need to repeat the latest Alex headlines in the NoW and Sunday People.
My opinion - tihough I may be wrong - is that a number of publications will support Alex; reasons include his photogenicity, his sexuality/love-life with its potential for sensationalist reporting, and, if he wins, obvious catchy headlines beloved of tabloids such as "From Whiner to Winner" "Hygiene-obsessed Alex cleans up in BB" etc.

As another poster pointed out, the TV magazines (TV Times, TV Quick) featuring BB on their cover this week all give Alex greatest prominence. As any pictures editor will tell you, the amount of prominence given to a cover personality is chosen with great deliberation, because that's what grabs the attention and in so doing exerts a subconscious effect on the reader - it is proclaiming "this is the main man".

Heat magazine is probably an exception - its favourite was Spencer and their articles to date have had overtones of bias against Alex. Most likely it will support Kate or Jonny.

Publications under the same ownership (OK!, Express, Star) may hedge their bets with each supporting a different person.

2. Graham Norton / RI:SE
I suspect Graham will support either Jade or Alex; of the two- probably Alex. He said on his show yesterday (commenting on Alex ruling himself out of the phone call), "Now I like Alex even more!" He has also featured on BBLB's travelling diary chair supporting Alex.
RI:SE have supported Alex from the beginning with their successful "Save Alex" campaigns against Alison and Spencer. I doubt if they will turn against him.
Alex has also had a significant number of support from celebs featured on BBLB, as well as in print eg. Claire Sweeney in OK! magazine.

3. Advertisers
Alex is the obvious candidate with the most marketing potential for advertisers for various reasons - eg, as a professional model he already has experience of the industry, photogenicity, suitability for a wide range of products based on what we've seen of him on BB(cleaning products, skin cosmetics, clothes, sunglasses, green tea...). Advertisers interested in contracting Alex's services would have a vested interest in wanting him to be the winner of BB.

Interesting that PR guru Max Clifford, with his experience of what it takes to succeed in the entertainment industry, considers Alex the only one of the HMs likely to have a successful showbiz career after BB, should he want it. (Contrast his assessment of Jonny & Kate - nice/pretty, but doesn't possess the necessary qualities.)

4. Chris Moyles would likely support Jonny or Kate - people more likely to appeal to the bloke/lad culture.

Very astute non-mention of Jade mystic-nutmeg!

Max Clifford, like Jonny and probably Alex and/or his dad, would sell his soul to the devil for air-time, or a couple of pages in the Sun. I don't even think what either of them would sell for 2 lines or a photo in the Guardian or Times!

LK - who has insomnia - asthma - stressed beyond belief. But thinks Maxy is a vulture (but am open to people proving me wrong) Please don't tell me he likes puppies and kittens!

thanks for replying, LadyKnight

I briefly mentioned Jade...the reason why I don't think Jade would attract serious media support, despite her high profile, is because she has already attracted a large anti-Jade fanbase. Her prominence in the tabloids and the public at large is based on ridicule - piggy jokes, stupidity, minger, etc. Graham Norton may say "I love Jade, let her win" but one can detect a flippancy to it. Jade is not seriously expected to win and I doubt whether there would be serious support for what is considered a lost cause.

I usually try to reply to anyone who say's something other than 'I hate whoever because they have said/done whatever' Just at the minute I have a lot of time and I have got to really like this forum.

Jade is not half as stupid as she seems. From what I have read - though I don't know how true it is. She has had a 'bit' part on the Bill - she has had modelling assignments. No am not talking about the porn pic's

If we are going to go down that road - I can give loads of examples of very famous film stars who did porn stuff! No, its not that I collect this information, for some reason I read it and absorb it, to be brought out at a later time.

Jade is not a lost cause. I think(!) with the right advice Jade could come out of the house with the money which maybe would give her the chance to completely change her life.

LK - could ramble on and on about what she really thinks about Jonny and Kate and Alex ... but what's the point.

Just one small thing .... Alex went into the house because as he said himself - his career (sp - i must learn how to spell that word) was at a standstill thanks to the events of Sept 11th. Perhaps Mr Clifford could arrange things so the next time Alex gets a good modelling job such an outrageous event does not take place.

LK looks at Alrightmate and wonders how you pass the nights - you any good at hangman, scrabble or battleships?

No, I don't do any of those things.

I spend a bit of time on here at the moment. But if I told you what I really did, well..............I'd sound like too much of a freak. You wouldn't be that interested.

Trust me .... you would not. I am interested.

LK - has been known to dig the garden up, clean the oven, read and read, drive her other half to total distraction going - are you sleeping?, watch crappy films, have half a novel written that will never get finished. Sometimes goes out walking for miles on end - which is a bit crap in London but better at my parents house because they live by the sea.

All the time clutching my trusty inhaler!

Go on .. what do you do?

dragging BB into this so we don't get the thread shut down .... obviously I watch BB3 at the moment!

Okay, as you asked. I'm putting myself on the line a bit here, as it might sound a bit unusual.
I'm learning about animation and 3D computer generated characters. So usually if I can't sleep I do a bit of research on the internet from time to time.
This can be looking at art sites and techniques, to looking for info, on the latest technology regarding digital humans. And if I'm not completely knackered, I'll try and put a few techniques to practice.
I do read sometimes, and sometimes I'll look for a favourite movie to watch.

Don't go out walking at this time of night, because I live in quite a dodgy area.

Sounds great to be able to walk by the sea in the middle of the night when you can't sleep.

By the way, can I ask about what the novel's about?

Anyway, I told you that you might find what I do a bit unusual. (It's not as geeky as it sounds,...honest)

Oh yeah. Keep it on topic. BB3 keeps me spending a bit of time on this great forum, and I usually watch the repeated Channel 4 BB during the early hours.

I personally believe that we as part of the media can influence people by suggesting an idea that they can agree (or disagree) with but the actual percentage that listen or watch RISE, GN or us on Radio 1 AND who vote for Big Brother is overall very small.

it is true that Chris Moyles is away on holiday. At the moment I think Kate is shinging through so on that basis I'll be supporting Kate on the show.

It could all change though if Alex or Jonny wake up and start being more fun in the last week!

Are you really THE BB Aled? ( I listen every night and usually agree with you but not this week I am afraid!!!)

well anyhoo I think the media DO sway public opinion. That was shown when Alex stayed in over Spencer. I think Graham Norton contributed to this greatly and I think he is having far too much say in what goes on (I used to be a GN fan but am no longer I think he is a bully just like Alex)

Also as has already been said if you are a Kate and Jonny fan get Alex out this week. Dont listen to BB Aled!!!!!
