Philips DVP5900
hi people.
i was just wandering if anyones got this? any good? are philips a good make? also can this read DVD-Rs. i need a definative answer. on the philips website it says DVD+R on the DVP5900 main site but when u go to comparison it states DVD-/+R. also on comet website (where i bought it) it states only DVD-R. So Im completely comfused! i have purchased it and its being delievered. as its an xmas present i shouldnt really be caring but if my mum decided she doesnt like it or wants a better replacement then i might take it to uni next year because it looks well nice and i "think" replaces the 5500 which i heard got a good DivXTest result! And i only use DVD-Rs. any other info much appreciated.

Any new DVD player which doesn't accept DVD -R is a rarity.
From the authoritative Philips site: Video playback Disc playback media : CD, CD-R/CD-RW, Video CD/SVCD, DVD, DVD-RW (Video mode), DVD-R, DVD-Video, DivX, WMA, DVD+R/+RW |

The information on the Philips website is invariably correct and reliable.
The Philips telephone Customer Service is another matter altogether. |

On continuation the guide says that it MIGHT not be able to play all DVD-R but will play ALL DVD+R. im assuming then that its done by make of DVD manufacturer and quality of disc ??
ive bought some Verbatim DVD-R, does anyone know if they are compatable with Philips drives? Also, is there a definative site to download firmware? And is there a region hack? (or is the drive region free already) thanks |

There's many reasons for disc compatibility, but quality of the discs is the most important. Verbatim are among the best, so should be compatible. To make sure, do you know how to get the media ID code (MID) using something freeware like DVD Indentifier?
The definitive site for up-to-date firmware is always the Philips support pages. If you didn't order it region-free, then the chances are that it isn't. Nothing I can find about region-free hacks for this unit. |
