Hello, I need some advice.

I bought a Nokia 8210 second hand to use as a cheap second phone. I've unlocked the phone and put in my new o2 PAYG sim card. The phone switches on correctly and boots to main screen and shows a signal. After about two seconds though the signal drops to zero and when i try and make a call it says "No Network Coverage".

My other phone is a Nokia 6230 on o2 online contract and it's perfect.

Has the 8210 been blocked? Any ideas or help would be great.

Cheers

sounds like the actual phone may have an IMEI bar on there, couldnt guarentee it but is a possibility, although usually it would say limited service if there was an imei bar.
why not give PAYG a ring and have them check the IMEI on their systems to see if it has a bar on, if the phone has never been used on o2 yet then it may not show on their system so you would probably need to contact the other network provider, alternatively, you may have a sim fault, have you tried the sim in another phone? you can then work out what is at fault!

As said, it sounds a lot like it's blacklisted.

who ever you bought it from should definately be giving you your money back...

I think so to. I've contacted the seller (ebay). He has 100% positive feedback so hopefullyit's an honest mistake. It cost me peanuts anyway so a rfund would be a bonus. I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand expensive phone from ebay.

I also phoned o2 who just advised it's either been barred or it's a phone fault. They wouldn't look into it for me. The phone seems fine so i doubt it's faulty.

Why wouldn't O2 investigate? Seems to me it's in their interests if they're gaining a customer!

Apparently not. I've heard back from the seller and it's sorted. Refund issued and i'll return the phone today.

I asked him where he got the phone and he said he buys them bulk from police auction. Is it just me or would most phones sold at police auctions have been blocked. I know if my phone was lost or stolen i would contact the network to block it.

it strikes me that there should be a database of blacklisted IMEI, that is publically accessible.

Yeah I reckon you've got a point there!

He sounds a decent enough bloke if he's sorted the refund already, so that's the main thing

If they are stolen and recovered then you'd have to say a fare few would be blaclisted.

But by no means all. I know that my network don't know my IMEI number. A lot of people swap ex contract phones with friends and stuff. Particularly the older ones, such as your 8210, it would definately not be under contract.

The network knows every IMEI you have ever used. It knows near enough the address you are using your phone at, and a lot more.

Well they've only recently started to log the IMEIs I believe. But not with standing that. It does not mean that if jonny PAYG has his phone nicked that the network will block his IMEI.

Why not?

The 8210 is a great basic phone and I'm sure many people still use them.

They have been logging IMEI numbers since the late 1990's along with addresses.

The network operator doesn't bar the phone you actually bought. It bars the one that was last used on the network. If they suspect dodgy activity they will bar the orginal phone too. However the system automatically bars the last phone used. Simple, because this would be the phone that had been lost or stolen.

If the phone is nicked, and they phone customer services to let them know, then it will be IMEI barred.

If the person writes it off and doesn't call customer services then no-ons to know so the IMEI number is not barred.

The police also can request IMEI bars, thus the reason when they give you a crime number they require an IMEI number before they allocate a person one.

I'm having a similar problem. My 7250i which I gave to a friend when I upgraded my phone shows "Contact Service" when he tried to use it. I have no idea how to resolve this.

Can anyone help?

Is your friend trying to use it on the same network as you originally had it?

Chances are the phone is locked to your network - you could try the unlocking thread to get it unlocked.

There is
http://www.recipero.com/recipero/products/checkmend/ (alas displays properly in IE only)

To perform a search:

1. Locate the serial or IMEI number of the property you want to check.

2. Send a text message to 84025. The message should read check, then leave a space, followed by the serial or IMEI number. Example: check 123456789

3. A short while later, you will receive a text message from CheckMEND with the results. Please note if you make a mistake and the system can't read the text message you will not get a reply and you will not be charged for the aborted search (just the cost of sending the original text message) so please feel free to try again.

Please note that use of the above service costs £1.50 per text plus standard network costs, whatever result they send you (and however accurate it may or may not be!)

Money grabbing b*******!

You can usually get this info for free from your own network
