Is the new Sagem VS3 Simply mobile any good? I am planning on buying one for my mum for Christmas as it looks easy to operate and will replace on old Nokia 5110. I think that Sagem are a French company. Do they make "decent" handsets? Remember that this phone will only be used to make occasional voice calls, with no requirements for texting, etc. and used on a Vodafone Pay-as-u-go SIM card.

All comments welcome.

I had 3 sagem phones(myv65, 2xMyx7), all three broke within 6 months (they each got replaced by another sagem until i had enough and told them i wanted my money back).

Problems were:
faulty speaker (on all three)
faulty camera (on one)
faulty buttons (on one)
poor software (on all)

I dont know about the VS3 though...

So would the Samsung 640 be a better bet?

The Samsung would make a nice gift, however samsungs are not the most user friendly phones. I'm still finding things out about my Z107 after a week. Usually I have a phone worked out in a day or less.

If you are after a simple user friendly phone I woud go for an entry level Nokia.

I bought a Nokia 1100 for my dad 6 months ago. Very simple to use the ringtones are easy to hear too. I don't think the 1100 is available anymore but a good alternative would be the Nokia 1600 which is about £39.

The good thing is if your Mum gets stuck with it just about anyone she asks (in your absence) will know how to use a Nokia.

I looked at the Nokia 1600 but wasn't very impressed with it - as indeed i haven't been impressed with ANY Nokia in the last few years! Plus, I would also like a flip phone. Looking in the Vodafone Shop, the Panasonic V2 looks the business and doesn't seem too complicated. Also its a good make, unlike the Sagem. And costs £100. Any thoughts on that one?

Is it what you want or what your mum would want? Nokia do do a flip phone. Not sure of the cost.

I agree a flip phone would be more desirable. Nokia's are not the most exciting phones either but thats what makes them so simple to use.

Nokia's flip phones do tend to have that "Kinder Surprise" look about them too.

It all depends on how simple you want it to be.

Have now checked out the Panasonic VS6 from Carphone Warehouse and am going to go with that. It has a very simple uncluttered keypad and a good camera / screen for the odd ocassion that my mum might want to take a photo.

Incidently i have a Sony Erricsonn 750i which is about the best camera/music phone out there at the moment - but too expensive for a phone that won't see much use.

Nope, you've lost me there!

Of all the phones I've looked at the Sagem is the "best" for my purposes, but I know that they are a company with a poor record and was trying to garner some real life experiences from some DS members about them.

The Panasonic isn't as user friendly as the Sagem but at least its made by a reputable company who are know for making quality products. I don't want to give a present that breaks by Easter!
