BT Text
Hi, I’m considering purchasing a BT “Relate SMS” telephone. However, I would like it to use the BT text service (not Bizzyline). I have found instructions on how to change its message centre numbers, and noticed there is both a send and receive number. I am now wondering what the, ‘receive number’ is for. I am wondering if the telephone would periodically dial this number to check if I have text messages, thus periodically blocking my line from incoming calls in the process. (This would be a major disadvantage for me.) Does anyone know if SMS telephones use the, ‘receive number’ this way?

I'm guessing you program in the receive number so that when the SMSC calls your number to deliver an incoming message, the phone knows from the caller ID that it's actually a message, not someone calling, and therefore doesn't 'ring'.

I have a BT Relate SMS phone and it doesn't periodically check for messages, they just come through when sent.
One problem with the above phone is it doesn't have caller ID on waiting call, which is annoying when someone is trying to get through whilst on another call and you can't see who it is. Which is why I now have a BT Diverse X10 which has SMS and also call waiting caller ID. |

Dan The phone doesn't ever call out to check for SMS messages. If an SMS can't be delivered to the phone because it's in use for a voice call, then the BT SMS Server will simply try again later, up to a few hours. You can also make a voice call to 0845 602 1111 to hear your stored texts read out by a female synthesised voice. Voicetexts are also sent if the recipient doesn't have a SMS text phone on their line. |
