Hi

i was in an asda store the other day and they had a durabrand dvd player which said it could play divx.

i cant remember the exact price but i think it was between £30-40 mark.

I have two of these Phillips players, and they work brilliantly. all Xvids, Divx and AVI's play fine. its multi region and really slim too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...102239-7592406

probably hte best one to get these days. It also supports Nero Digital, the fastest and most comprehensive encoder.

I bought a Tevion QS808 from Aldi for £35 after reading some posts on this forum a while ago. It's proved to be a top player, plays DivX and Xvid and even upscales DVD when you zoom so no jaggies!

The only downsides are that the tray glows bright blue and needs to be covered at night time to stop it being distracting and every now and then it gets noisy, but a quick off and on sorts that out.

It's better than my old Yamada 6600, outputs a sharp RGB picture and has optical out to my amp....

I recommend getting a player that supports Packed Bitstream (the default for XVID), such as the Targa DP-5100x.

If the player doesn't support Packed Bitstream the playback will be jerky. The workaround is to use a program called MPEG4Modifier to check for packed bitstream and unpack it if necessary. It doesn't take long, but obviously it would be better if you didn't have to do this. After updating the firmware my player supports this so there is no need to mess around converting any files.

Another advantage is to have a player that supports long file names. Some players list files in DOS 8.3 format, with only 8 characters visible, which can make it hard to tell one file from another. You could shorten them on your PC to make them more readable before burning to disc, but again it's a bonus if you don't have to.
