Yes but what about Ballroom Dance?

rarified, yes but there are plenty of pro dancers/judges that could do a far better job than Arlene has managed during this series.

How can she be populist though? most people will never have heard of her and if it was Richard & Janet Gleve, or Robin & Rita Short no one would have been any the wiser and people certainly wouldn't have been running around the country saying "they should have had Arlene Phillips".

I agree, there can be cross-over etc and if Arlene were to spend at least a little effort on giving good, well balanced, well delivered criticism and leave her nasty, unpleasant, personal assassinations out of it, I wouldn't be so against her being on the show. Believe me, I honestly didn't start watching this show with any like/dislike for any of the judges, it is purely their behaviour which has made me feel this way.

Yes, and their success relied totally on skimpy clothing and and sexual inuendo, their dancing skills were highly questionable. Now if "hot Gossip" had been world renown for their Dancing skills and not just for looking sexy, Arlene would have had something to be proud of. It's a bit like Toniolli's "Space Vixens" second Rate poor quality dancing relying on sex appeal. Well that says a whole lot about their abilities doesn't it.
