If I have read correctly it seems this is a very good recorder with seemingly very few issues with regards to any problems.

I am looking to buy one of these but wondered if anyone knew why they may be a discontinued item at a local electrical store I have been to. Currently they are selling boxed stock at £240 (very few available).

I had considered buying one of these and a Panasonic DMRES10. This way I could have recored two channels, but with the price of this the lowest I have seen I may buy two of these instead, just wondered if they were possibly due for replacement and that may be why there are discounted and named as a discontinued item at this store.

From what I believe, the DMREH50 can only record one thing at once even though it has a Hard Drive and a DVD Ram Drive? How good are the editing facilities on the Panny? I think the Tosh XS34 is probably the best, but I think I just need good editing facilities to cut out unnecessary clips and to have a seemless join between cuts that are predictable.

Finally has anyone sorted out how to record the WSS signal to keep the widescreen format correct on -R/-RW and +R? I would have thought that seeing as Sony DVDs can record onto these formats with the signal it may just be a case of a software upgrade from Panasonic. Its not the end of the world but I have a TV that cannot change its format picture for things that look squashed or stretched.

I've had a DMREH50 for about 6 weeks and can't praise it enough (previously had a number of LiteOn DVRs which drove me mad with their problems)

According to the Panasonic website, the DMREH50 is still classed under New Products, so wouldn't have thought it'd be discontinued just yet.

Like you, I've been looking at the DMREH10 as a secondary machine - they're down to around £120 if you shop around.

Pretty sure it was this model they had marked. I will have a look tomorrow to make sure (and see if they still have some left).

I think the benefit of these hard disk models is that you can store programmes to watch at a later date when there is nothing to watch. Great for people like myself who never have enough time to watch everything at once.

I think the only disadvantage of using a ES10 is that if I want to transfer to Hard disk I think it will take some time for DVD RAM to HD.

However Panasonics seem to get the best write up for picture quality, the only negatives seem to be no dual layer support and the WSS signal problem (which the Sonys seem to have).

Have you done any editing on your Panny? I wondered how good the edits are between cuts, whether editing is very accurate to what you do and want or if it has quirks! Is there anything that you wish it could do or have to be better?

Editing is pretty good - I regularly edit out adverts and the "joins" are very clean.

Went into the store today and it is now back at its highest price.

I think when it was labelled as discontinued and 20% off it was a mistake. Shame really as I should have got one on the day if I had known. Sales Assistant today told me he couldn't understand why it was marked as such as it is still a current model, so definitely looks like a mistake.

So may look at 2 x ES10 to edit between for now, not quite as elegant but I can record two programmes at once and ecit between the two drives for the same (ish) price as the EH50 if I had bought at the discounted price.
