Phantom Call Return(1471/3) Fees On BT Bill
While checking my online BT bill I noticed about 23 entries showing as
Call Return Fees ,22 being on one day and the other the following day .The total amounts to £1.71. I called BT but as it is an online bill they said they cannot access the account and said to wait until I get to my billing date and then ask about it . They also said that the 1471/3 facility ( either together or the 3 on it's own) cannot be disabled but I'm not sure about what I was told . A friend of mine, who lives alone as I do , had similar charges on her bill a while back and BT credited her account (she wanted to see if the charges reappeared after this was done ) but I cannot remember if it was both 1471 AND 3 or just the 3. I'll check with her later . Has anyone else experienced such charges appearing when they did not use the facility ...I dont use it as I know it is chargegeable and I am quite able to dial a number . 1471+3
You've probably dialled 1471 and pressed three to return the call.
Once connected to the number you are calling back, you will be charged at normal BT Together rates. You will not be charged for calls to local and national numbers begining 01 or 02 or to 0800 numbers if you subscribe to Option 2 or 3. BT probably displays 1471 rather than the number you called back. I very much doubt that BT have charged you just for dialling 1471! It is impossible for BT to charge for standard 1471 set by ofcom. You may be subscribing to 1471 extra. When you dial 1471 , how many numbers does it play back yo you? 1471 extra can play up to the last 5 numbers. other useful codes for you to remember are: 141 withold your number 1470 release caller ID 1475 Erase the number on 1471 (You will receive ring back) 14701475 same as 1475 but only if you have permanent number withold. You can also dial *27# instead of 1471! |

I definitely do not have 1471extra but having had another look at my phone bill I see there is a related call to 1 number ( a mobile ) at the same time as each of the Call return entries .What might have happened is that I have dialled 1471 then three ( an exceptionally rare event for me as I am well aware that this is chargegeable) ,got an engaged number then proceeded to use Last Number Redial which presumably would be 14713 thereby incurring a charge each time I did that until the person answered or I gave up ... If that is the case I'll be a lot more careful next time . |

NOTE:
You are not charged when you press 3! You are charged, when the call is connected! So if it was engaged, then you shouldn't be charged. If you reached a voicemail service, then you are charged regardless of using 1471 or not. So if you call 07802-123-456 for example and it says 'You have reached the o2 voicemail messaging service for 07802-123-456' you will be charged as all service providers consider this as a connected call. Mobile network operators still charge companies like BT termination rates for reaching voicemail services. If you call 07802-123-456 for example and a message says 'It has not been possible to connect your call, please try again later' or 'The mobile phone is switched off please try again later' or just an engaged tone'. Then you will not be charged as it an unconnected call. Ring back: If you dial a landline number and it is busy, and you press 5 to accept a call back when the line is vacant, you will be charged 10p per ring back. Or order 'Ring back' as a package for £1.75 per month and get unlimited ring back requests. If you choose to cancel a ring back request by dialing #37#, you won't be entitled for refund, nor be a entitled for refund, if the line is still busy after 40 minutes as it automatically cancels the request. Other hidden charges you should be aware of: Reverse charge calls: If someone at your home accepts a reverse charge call, then you will have to pay for the call even if the person calling has the wrong number. A BT operator always asks for your consent before connecting your call with the persons name. 0800=Reverse is automated and if a person has not left a name you should not accept the charges as it could be from anyone! Reverse charge calls are also very expensive, it's some thing like £2.50 per minute and shouldn't stay on too long. |

If you reached a voicemail service, then you are charged regardless of using 1471 or not. I understand about the connection to voicemail being regarded as a successful ,and therfore chargeable, connection but according to http://www.zyra.org.uk/phone.htm the charge for using 1471/3 takes place when you press 3 and not when the call is connected . " Call Return (press 3) element of BT 1471 - from the 1st August 2004, BT will be introducing a 6p fixed fee to the Call Return element of BT 1471. The fee will apply when customers press "3" to return the call to the telephone number of the last caller and will be charged regardless of whether or not the call is connected. Dialling BT 1471 without using the Call Return will remain a free service." |

Our 1471 Call Return service tells you the last number that called while you were away from your phone. It also lets you return the call straight away, by simply pressing 3. 1471 is always active and useful even if you have an answering machine. The Call Return (press 3) element of BT 1471 costs a fixed fee of 6p. The fee will apply when customers press "3" to return the call to the telephone number of the last caller and will be charged regardless of whether or not the call is connected. Dialling BT 1471 without using the Call Return will remain a free service. |

1471
Well BT have not advertised this enough and I advise BT customers to approach Ofcom.
It's only BT that charges for the use of pressing '3'! This would be a good idea of getting BT customers to switch to Telewest

How much more notification does BT need to give?
There is a clear announcement after dialing 1471 on a BT phone that you will be charged for pressing "3" to return the call. |
