Regarding serious music that should have got to Number One but was robbed by a joke record.

I nominate Vienna by Ultravox being beaten by Shaddup ya Face.

What do other FMs think?

Coldplay - Speed of Sound
U2 - City Of Blinding Lights

Both fantastic, wonderful songs - robbed of the top spot by... well, I think you might remember. (A certain cartoon frog)

Possibly the best MANICS song ever!!! Plus, Madonna's "BEAUTIFUL STRANGER" held at no.2 by S CLUB 7.

The fact that the Crazy Frog got to number 1.

It just shows how a bit of excessive marketing and constant bombarding of viewers with adverts can turn them into drones who willingly go out to the shops and buy this crap. It amazes me who would go and spend £4 on a CD single with this drivel on.

I have no problem with cheese, but the Crazy Frog is just nothing short of noise.

What's worse is how Westlife or some talent show pop act manage to get to number one at Christmas. Seriously, who goes out and buys this stuff?

All off the above pale in comparison to the injustice of The Beatles "Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane" being kept from No1 by Englebert Humperdink's "Release Me".

Darkness - "I Believe In A Thing Called Love"

Couldn't knock Black Eyed Peas "Where Is The Love?" off No. 1.

The biggest injustice?? Any Westlife single that sold more than 10 copies, oh well that's all of them then. Ditto Mcfly too.

Does it make a difference, really? Clearly everyone with any taste recognises the good over the bad. The fact that 'It didn't get to No1' is surely irrelevant?

Or do we measure the worth of music by its chart position?

Mr Blobby, Bob The Builder and The Firm must have all kept someone else off the top spot.

I think the biggest injustice was Deee-lite not making no.1 with Groove is in the Heart. Had something to do with a tie at no.1, but they gave it to the record which sold more the week before.

Wasn't Eminem held off the top spot twice by novelty records? I think the first one was the excellent Stan, kept off by Starlight from the Superman Lovers. Not sure what the second Eminem one was (may have been the equally excellent Cleaning Out My Closet), but I believe it charted at number two behind that recording legend Bob the Builder.

Unfortunately I think we do. Ultimately, the Guinness Book of Hit Singles and various tomes like that which purport to state the official statistics will only record such stats as who sold the most records and what the top ten was in a given year. It won't say, for example, that 'even though Crazy Frog reached number one, it was considered by almost everyone that Coldplay's Speed of Sound was the superior record'. To someone who's never heard either, all they have to go on is the official record, which will show Crazy Frog was 'better' than Coldplay. Do a random search for a year before your time for the top ten of that year. Without first-hand knowledge of any of the records, as far as you're concerned the record at number one must be the best single of that year.

'Id like to give you one for xmas' not making top twenty last year.
a classic xmas song, in the grand traditions of British pantomime and double entendres. Such an injustice this was'nt number one.

Stan WAS number one, the Supermen lovers were never Number One, and the two singles were released several months apart. And let's not forget the fact that "cleaning out my closet" and Bob The Builder were released nearly 2 years apart. In reality, Bob The Builder knocked Stan off number 1. Supermen Lovers wasn't released near any Eminem single.

I stand corrected. Don't know where I got the idea from then.

Michael Jackson putting out limited edition picture discs etc of "Earth Song" for his devoted fans to buy it. It prevented the Beatles scoring their 18th number one with Free as a Bird.

Not the greatest Beatles song of all time, far from it, but it was still a lovely song. They did do a few mistakes with the anthology series which prevented them getting a number 1.

1) Released the wrong track first, as Real Love was far better.

2) Had it released to the radios way too long before its release date.

But it was still Michael Jackson's tactics that prevented it from being number 1.
