Unfortunately I think we do. Ultimately, the Guinness Book of Hit Singles and various tomes like that which purport to state the official statistics will only record such stats as who sold the most records and what the top ten was in a given year. It won't say, for example, that 'even though Crazy Frog reached number one, it was considered by almost everyone that Coldplay's Speed of Sound was the superior record'. To someone who's never heard either, all they have to go on is the official record, which will show Crazy Frog was 'better' than Coldplay. Do a random search for a year before your time for the top ten of that year. Without first-hand knowledge of any of the records, as far as you're concerned the record at number one must be the best single of that year.
