Sony Walkman or Ipod Nano?
My boyfriend wants to get me one of these for xmas. He's asking which one I would prefer. I still use a cd discman - I am completely ignorant to these new fangled technologies!
Can anyone suggest which of these two items would be the better buy? Thanks SC |

Without a doubt the Walkman. I am facing the same choice as your boyfriend and I'll e buying the Sony.
The Nano is overpriced and selling purely because of the cache surrounding the iPod right now. Because if people took time to compare the specifications they whould pick the Walkman, no contest for me. |

The Sony will give you more tracks (~1500 or the £159 model, versus ~500 on the £139 Nano or ~1000 on the £179 Nano. Sony may quote more, but that's based on lower quality), and a longer battery life (20 hours Vs 14 hours).
On the iPod's side, it is much neater, has flash memory instead of a hard drive (so it's has no moving parts and will never skip) and has a colour screen. The iTunes software is much nicer than Sony's too IMO. I personally prefer the iPod Nano, but both have their merits. http://www.apple.com/uk/ipodnano/ http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowArtic...site=odw_en_GB |

I agree with Nate - go for the Sony. Three people I know have IPods - two have had to return them due to battery and freezing problems.
I really believe people buy IPods because they've heard the name so many times (for some reason the media use it to describe any mp3 player), but if you do some research you'll find that there are a lot of better players out there (Sony being one). |

Thank you all for your feedback - I think I will perhaps go for the Sony Walkman - I've heard a few stories of people having to return ipods for various reasons.
God, I'm easily swayed

I'd get the Sony Walkman. In purple
I really like the new organic design where the display shows through the case rather than a screen in the case. Looks well cool.

anyone know if you can hack the itunes software to work with the walkman.
this is its biggest shortfall i have found and is what has stopped me recommending it to all my mates. |

I have a Sony NW-A3000 and its fantastic, the Connect software for transfering music onto it is the worst peice of software i've ever had the misfortune to use.

i remember it got slated a good while ago, but hasn't the sony software improved by now?
a lot of people prefer being able to drag and drop files onto the player, but iTunes is so easy to use - you simply connect the iPod to the computer, it automatically fires up iTunes, and automatically updates the iPods library to the iTunes library. (assuming there is enough disk space on the iPod, otherwise you'd do it manually.) i've never played with a sony, but another big plus of the iPod is how intuitive it is to use and navigate - the scroll wheel really is hard to beat in that respect. if you can, it might be worth seeing if you can look at both in a shop before deciding. Neither. Search the net for details of the Creative Zen and its various different models. Easier and better music transfer than either Apple or Sony IMHO.

Would certainly go for the iPod - the excellent iTunes software that interfaces with it, seamless integration with what is, IMO, the best music store out there and an stunning design to go along with it!

could it be that 1% (or whatever) of any electrical product has issues, but 1% of tens of millions of ipods is a greater number than 1% of tens of thousands of other players? Iain |

I find all these anti iPod posts very strange.
I've had a 60gb ipod for 6 months and not had any problems. Its fantastic, the iTunes software is very easy to use and is even better with the built in music store (although I'd rather pay less to get better quality music from CDs, handy for the odd track) and podcasts. Its a nice touch to have to be able to have the album artwork displayed too. Heck, you can even have music videos if you have one of the new ipods. (Yes I know you can buy other media players that can do more.) I've heard Sony's software is awful. Yep there have been problems with some Nano but it might be worth looking at the 30gb iPods- they aren't that much bigger in terms of price or actual size, mine now looks like a brick in comparison, and its only six months old! Wouldn't want to be without it though! |

As for the OP's question, I believe the Sony Walkman to be the lesser of the two evils. Sure, it doesn't work with iTunes, but that's a bonus if anything - you don't need iTunes to be able to use it.

If you actually take a moment to compare the iPod alongside the other MP3 players on the market, you'd see that in fact it leaves a lot to be desired.
or their seemless integration with iTunes? or even - god forbid - the fact that they look so good? i'm not a chav. nor do i consider it an accessory - but rather a great way of carrying my entire music collection around with me. as for how much they leave desired - i guess that depends on whether or not you actually want a radio (i have 6,000 tracks on mine, so don't), or OGG support (amazingly most people in the street probably haven't even heard of OGG), or want to be able to play your music at the wrong speed (not top of my list when i was looking for an mp3 player) Quote:

Even though I bought an ipod, I'd advise you to get a sony.
The only reason why I didn't get a sony was because i was worried that the software was awful and thus transferring songs would take ages, as my computer is amazingly appaling. Although itunes isn't amazing either, the transfer rates are much quicker. I think if you've got a half decent computer, then transferring songs shouldn't be such a bad problem if you get the sony. As described above, sony wins in every other category - looks, battery life, price, audio quality, the fact it has a replaceable battery etc... I'd recommend the new sony NWA1000 (6GB) - £140 on amazon or the NWA3000 (20GB) - £175 on amazon So get a SONY!!!! BTW, this post may be absurdly late, seeing how its christmas tomorrow n all and the original poster was getting an mp3 player as a christmas gift, but i'm bored and got nothing else to do |

Its format support is probably the worst of any media player on the market (perhaps to match the iPod) and to top it all off, it doesn't have a stop button! I've also seen random crashes and display corruption occurring within iTunes on a number of PCs.

So yeah, it's awful. ![]() gives it all the flexibility you'd ever need. as for skins - they're just eye candy, and don't really add any functionality. Iain |

I already had a Sony and was moderately happy with it, but I was given an iPod for my birthday, and after experimenting with it for a couple of weeks, I gave the Sony away, and I haven't missed it -- or the horrible software. iPod plus iTunes is a win-win combination. The iPod is a delight to use, the sofware is great, the iTunes store has everything I want and integrates seamlessly with the iPod.
I've never had a problem with the iPod, and I'd never go back to Sony. |
