Picture Interference(?) on DHD4000
Push It Out
10-12-2005
All of a sudden, after a fair few months of using my DHD4000, the picture seems to be getting what looks like interference.

I can only describe it as flashes or blocks of colour, mainly pink or green, that appear regularly but only flicker for an instant.

These blocks normally cover around a third of the screen, sometimes they appear striped.

Mainly on the BBC's channels, but a little on others.

The sound is fine, and the signal strength and quality (from Crystal Palace) seems to be fine (both 6-8) when I check through the menu page.

Watching through terrestrial there's no problems so I presume it's the Thomson...

It's an old CRT TV if that's a factor....

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks a lot.

I get some thing like that on my box from time to time. Its a glitch with the graphics output card - from what I have seen in the year of owning this, its almost like there's an Audio/video card like on a PC. I have seen a few times live and recorded tv with no audio, but good pictures, and also pictures that flash up in green squares from time to time. The box will struggle on often, but sooner or later you will need to do some thing about it. If your lucky, simply switching off and o using the remote will fix it. But some times, I have had to switch off the power at the wall, wait for a few mins, power on at the wall, wait for the yellow lamp to go red (like a special "repair" startup process), then switch on with the remote.

To me, this sounds like perfectly normal impulse interference, not anything specific to the Thomson. This is exactly the way any DTT box may react when the signal is weak, or there is electrical interference corrupting the signal - pixellation, blockiness, green blocks covering parts of the screen, jumping etc.

The chances are you have a marginal signal that may have been fine earlier in the year but is now beginning to weaken, perhaps due to the change in weather (pressure changes can make a big difference) or an aerial problem/deterioration. Alternatively, there may be some electrical equipment interfering with it, such as nearby fridge, central heating pump (are you using the heating more now?) or some other culprit.

The "green boxes" and pictures with missing sound dont happen often enough to be interference, and its not weather specific. Plus, resetting the box fixes the problem straight away. And this doesnt happen when there's other interference about - like sound blips due to motor scooters. Thats why I think its a software bug in the Audio video output card/system.

I once had a strip of evenly spaced vertical lines about 1" long on the top of the screen. Cured by unplugging and leaving for a few minutes.
