Just wondering which stories people would like to see released on DVD next year. My top picKs are

1st Doctor: The Romans
2nd Doctor: The War Games
3rd Doctor: Inferno
4th Doctor: The Seeds of Doom
5th Doctor: Enlighenment
6th Doctor: Trial of a Timelord
7th Doctor: The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

I've heard that a commentary has already been recorded for Inferno, so that's looking promising!

I'd love to see Genesis of the Daleks released on DVD - and I really hope that Inferno and The War Games get a DVD release soon.

I would think Genesis was a very likely candidate for release before too long. I've never really been overly fond of it myself, I personally don't rate Terry Nation very highly as a Who writer. I know there are many others who would strongly disagree with me!

I still reckon The Seeds of Doom would be my choice for the fourth Doctor, its always had a special place in my heart!

I can see where you're coming from with the comments about Terry Nation - but he did give us the Daleks, without which it's debatable whether or not the series would still be around today.

My beef with Terry Nation was that once invented, he insisted that Davros appear in every Dalek story (I thought he detracted from the Daleks' own menace making them little more than Ogrons in the later stories.) I also really dislike the way that his estate holds the BBC to ransome every time they want to use the Daleks (but I can't have it both ways I suppose. )

If it hadn't of already (recently) been released on dvd, I would have picked City of Death as my Tom Baker story.

Rumour has it that Genesis is slated for 2006. However, as usual, expect nothing until we get the official announcement!

Anyway, if we're allowed one story per Doctor, my choices would be:

WH: The War Machines
PT: The War Games
JP: The Daemons *
TB: Robot **
PD: Castrovalva
CB: Trial of a Time Lord
SM: The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

* I'm not sure if the RT is happy enough about colour restorations for DVD but hopefully we will get these recolourised stories sometime.

** I think Robot is one story which they could easily put out with optional new CG effects. They could get a convincing takn to superimpose over the Action Man one seen on screen and I'm sure a CG Robot could be overlaid over the scenes of growing and shrinking which are not very successful in the original.

Yes I'll give you that, his original Dalek story did have a huge impact on the series as a whole, and indeed its survival to this day. But I would actually prefer to give credit for that to the design of the Daleks rather than the way they were written. I've always been of the opinion that Nation created them but had very little idea what to do with them. For example Power of the Daleks and Evil of the Daleks far outshine any of Nation's sixties offerings, and I've always thought his seventies Dalek stories were particularly lazy. Having said that, Genesis does stand out as deserving of a special mention, it is of a higher quality than these other stories.

I would love to see Power and Evil fully recovered and restored. Pat Troughton is one of my favourite Doctors (I'm allowed to have more than one ) and it would be great to see how Ben and Polly cope with the after-effects of the regeneration (I've read the novels, but it's not quite the same.)

The restoration team did an incredible job with the episodes that are featured on the Lost in Time collection, in my opinion.

I agree with you, celerysoup (btw - does that protect you from praxis gasses? ) about some of the Pertwee dalek stories - they did seem to drag a little, in my opinion. That's not to say I don't like them, but as you already posted, there were better dalek stories. It just seems that at times during that era, any old excuse to throw in the daleks would be used.

The thing that used to get me (and again this was pretty much down to Terry Nation) was the way they had a title like Planet of the Daleks then expected us to be surprised when the enemy was kept hidden until the end of episode one when (gasp!) a Dalek would be revealed!

LOL yes - it's the sort of mistake Homer Simpson would make.

But were you not able to suspend disbelief?

What I would like to see is a series of Boxsets made available.
How about
The Wargames (plus Pat Troughton retrospective), Peladon, E Space Trilogy, The return of the Master, The Black Guardian Trilogy, The Key to Time Season, The Kings Demons & Planet of Fire, Trial of a timelord,

In each of these boxsets are some great stories but also some naff stories
Monster of Peladon was a shadow of Curse.
E Space suffered from Adric .
The Masters Return had fantastic stories with Keeper and Logopolis but Catrovolva stank.
Black Guardian god fun with Mawdryn and Enlightenment but Terminus was terminally dull.
Key to Time good fun but Power of Kroll was dire.

My wish(list) would be, seeing that it took about twenty years for all of the VHS tapes to come out, that all the DVDs will be out well before I am sixty!

That's what I love about Doctor Who fans, we're such a diverse bunch. You think Castrovalva stank, and I think its wonderful! Its by far my favourite post regenration story, and I'd love to see it out on DVD. As for Power Of Kroll, I've never felt too negative about that myself, whereas The Armageddon Factor must be one of the biggest disappointments in the series history. The grand finale to the Key to Time season couldn't possibly have been any more boring! The Key to Time will no doubt appear over here sometime, it is already available as a box set in the states. Maybe if the new box set featuring An Unearthly Child, The Daleks and Edge of Destruction does well, we may see more box sets in the future.

I really enjoyed The Armageddon Factor - but then I really enjoyed The Gunfighters, which always seems to come in for a slating every now and then.

As you say, we're a diverse bunch - and all the better for it, I think.

Stuart - good call about The War Machines (I loved seeing the Doctor in a swinging London club ) and I love your ideas about rejuvenating Robot.

WH: The War Machines
PT: The War Games
JP: The Planet of the Spiders
TB: The Invasion of Time
PD: The Awakening
CB: TBH - nothing else really
SM: Again, the ones I'd want are out now

Not necessarily because they're the best, but the ones I'd want to see again, and where the extras could be very enlightening.

I don't disagree with you. Daleks aside (and even here, one could argue it was their design that afforded them iconic status), Terry Nation was a lucky and overrrated writer. Certainly, I believe his scripts for The Avengers hastened that series' demise.

I do like Genesis, I must admit. But that was when he raised his game, which he didn't do often enough, alas.

And I agree with you about The Seeds of Doom. I've always found it hugely enjoyable.

But I want Inferno and The War Games first, please!

Sorry, but I'm not going for one story from each doctor.

In no particular order:

Planet of the spiders.

Genesis of the Daleks

Sontaran Experiment

Monster of Peladon

Brain of Morbius

Planet of evil

You will notice a familiar thread running through my wish list.

They all have Sarah Jane Smith (the best ever assistant) in them.

You might want to add The Time Warrior, Sarah's first story.

I want to see Deadly Assassin, the story that proved Dr Who can be sucessful outside the Dr and companion format, I also like Toms new romanic look .

Would love to see 'Terror of the Autons' released on DVD, last saw it when I was really young! As someone else said earlier in this thread though, this was another 'colourised' story like 'The Daemons'. Seen it on VHS on ebay but am waiting to see it for cheaper than between £25 and £35!!!

I can't remember this fully, so forgive me if I've read this wrong but doesn't the 'colourisation' process make life extremely difficult for the Restoration Team when it comes to restoring material that has been treated in this way?

I think they've said that they would go back to square one and start the whole colourisation process again. ISTR there were some doubts about the quality of the finished article but things are moving on all the time so I hope we'll see some of these stories before too long.

We tend not to hear too much about advances in restoration technology until they're about to release a stiry which has used them (eg VidFIRE and Reverse Standards Conversion).

Would like to see seasons released in one boxset rather than indivdually but the BBC knows it can make more out of us that way which is a shame.

More Tom Baker stories, particularly the early ones or perhaps release either the E-Space trilogy or the three Master stories as a boxset.

Would definitely like to see the War Games!

It seems we have similar tastes, my friend. I too am eagerly awaiting Inferno and The War Games, and anyone who appreciates The Seeds of Doom is OK by me!

I also agree with what you say about The Avengers. I also think the best thing to happen to Blakes' 7 was when Nation got bored of it and placed it in the hands of more capable writers like Robert Holmes and Chris Boucher.

I'll just add a few more stories to my wishlist if I may...Doctor Who and the Silurians, The Daemons, The Masque of Mandragora, Image of the Fendahl, The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva, Kinda, Snakedance, Frontios.

Well according to Outpost Gallifrey's Release list, next years releases currently stand at: -

The Beginning Boxset (Confirmed) - An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Edge Of Destruction

Inferno (Not Confirmed)

Genesis Of The Daleks (Not Confirmed)

..................................................................

I think Keeper of Traken ought to be released seeing as Anthony Ainley was one of the people doing the commentary.
