TV on a mobile
I saw signs outside Vodafone yesterday for a handful of Sky TV channels through your mobile:
Anyone got this, whats the quality like Are other networks going to invest in the same technology, will it be avaiable on PAGY (including the tv subs) |

I had a look at the Vodafone live! TV stuff the other day - there wasn't much on there that was worth looking at. What have you seen on 3 that was "good"? |

3 offer Mobi TV which has not had good reveiews from Orange users (its a 3rd party appliaction). It consists mostly of loops of programming and is not real live streaming TV like most of Vodafone's channels.
The daftest thing with 3's TV is that it is restricted to Noika handsets only!! Vodafone's Sky and Extra channels work on all of their 3G handset range and its free to try until 31st January 2006. |

Granted, two more live channels than MobiTV offer, but certainly NOT "most of Vodafone's channels". |

The show I saw was a looped property show - I don't think it really worked because the thing about property shows is that you want to imagine what it's like in the house and you can't do that on such a small screen - Do other types of TV work on mobile screens? Drama? Sport?

Most of Vodafone's channels are more than 1 hour loops.
Mobi-TV is application dependent and as such only operates on Nokia handsets, even then not particularly well on either Orange or 3, hense the lack of promotion to date. It does not work particularly well and is poor in comaprison with Vodafone's 3G range embracing Sky TV service. Mobi-TV is now being offered free for 3 months to new Orange 3G subscribers (promotion) but all the user feedback I have seen about is very negative sadly. |

I must admit, even though it's still only early days and it is free - forums such as 3g.co.uk are FULL of negative posts about Vodafone's TV offering (and probs with MobiTV too).
I think ALL the networks are going to have to look into other methods of TV delivery such as DVBH or the DAB initiative favoured by the Koreans (& Virgin!). Even with HSPDA around the corner, they're seriously going to start running out of bandwidth if they keep using 3G as the primary delivery method.... |
