Funai VCRs
Is anyone familiar with this brand of VCRs? I need to replace the VCR in the living room, as ours has started to chew tapes up when rewound. I don't want to pay alot, as we have a DVD recorder and won't be using the VCR much, only to watch tapes we already have recorded. I need a Nicam one with 4/6 heads and 2 scarts. I can find a Funai one for £45, but after that, the cheapest one is a Hitachi for £60.

there is or was a funai one on ebuyer but it was mono and the back photo revealed it was a clone of a philips vcr i was looking at in currys a while ago so i guess they're just rebaged philips vcr's. If your refering to the £45 funai one in argos the photo of it which shows the led display looks exactly the same as the philips one too so it might be a good buy

Like to clear that up, the philips is a re-badged funai if i am not mistaken.
Funai make componants and large portions of electrical equipment such as TV's, VCR's and DVD players as well as others. They then have agreements (contracts if you like) to let other copmpanies such as philips etc put their names on and give them a portion of the profits. But in the last year or so funai have decided to make the equipment avaliable under their brand, thus keeping the price down as you are not paying for the brand. Thats what a bloke on QVC said sometime a while ago, think he was that bloke who does the Archos stuff, knows his stuff. I hope thats correct ![]() edit: found a link to back up my statement: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthr...&&page=3&pp=15 post 42 especially has a little info on it. |

Well thats the theory, they are supposed to be very good and as they make things that are re-badged for various companies they should be good. We most likely have at least one thing made my Funai that we dont know we even have. |

Funai used to make Amstrad's videos back in the 90s.

I managed to get one, but i'm taking it back. It looks cheap, the RF sockets are burried away in a box type thing and it's a job on getting the leads in, the scarts don't seem to fit properly in the sockets, they're kind of floppy, it doesn't set it's own clock, it doesn't start tuning itself in, you have to start it off yourself and the the picture through the VCR has interference lines and all the channels end up in a different order.

Funai are indeed a large manufacturer for a lot of the branded manufacturers, most of the big companies have stopped producing VCRs and are taking them from Funai or similar manufacturers (Orion etc).
ALL videos are cheaply made now, they have to be, they are very cheap after all

Just as a matter of interest, even if going for a cheap VCR, why not this Hitachi at under £40? I'd put more faith in Hitachi's customer services team than Funai's if there was a problem..........
