I was never really impressed with the way Colin Baker played him... I liked his character being very off-ish with people, but the way it came across wasn't too good IMO. Patrick Troughton played him with humour and menace, and he came across as very very likeable. Similar to how Sylvester McCoy played him towards the end.

The clip I saw on GMTV today showed Tennant over acting like mad. Its back to the old style doctor which I never liked. I want sexy broody Eccleston back.

Oh no! Another clip missed!

I'm not so sure about the brooding Eccleston - he seemed to spend more time grinning manically from what I could see.

As for Tennant over-acting - remember he's in post-regeneration trauma. He'll settle down. Have you never seen Robot?

Tennant's human doctors are in for a shock.

I'm with you all the way on this one. I am so trying to give DT the benefit of the doubt, but even the small clips I have seen just make me wish all the more that Chris hadn't gone. I was really enjoying the clip of the tardis crashing and thinking it was wonderful, until it was all spoiled by DT stumbling out with the most stupid look on his face looking awful.

But let's be honest - you made up your mind about this months ago. All you've seen of him amounts to a few minutes of non-typical stuff so it's a bit unfair to condemn him based on that.

See what you think by the end of episode one (and I don't mean The Christmas Invasion). If he's really not to your liking you can find something else to watch instead.

Eccleston was good but there were lots of aspects of his portrayal which were less than "fantastic" in my book. Personally, I'm quite happy that he's gone and is giving someone else a chance to shine as the Doctor.

I like what I've seen of DT so far - maybe I'll be proved wrong when he does it all for real but we really have to wait and see before having an opinion.

Eccleston was okay, but I found his version was a bit of a bully (esp. towards Mickey). I was always uncomfortable with this

I am looking forward to DT as, like DenWatts from what I have seen, I find his approach much more like Patrick Troughton.

The thing about Troughton's portrayal, for me, was that having followed the powerhouse that was 'Bill' Hartnell, he took the role in a completely different direction - and did it so well he made the part his own overnight.

I loved the way he acted all scared - children (of all ages! ) could empathise and were scared with him. But when the time was right the keen mind his predecessor first demonstrated would come into play and we knew that, although Troughton looked and acted completely differently to Hartnell, he *was* the Doctor and he would save the day.

David Tennant has the same job as Patrick Troughton did way back in the '60s. He has to convince a whole new generation of fans that he IS the Doctor (many of them will have only known Chris Eccleston's portrayal) as well as keeping the 'original' fanbase happy.

I am in no doubt whatsoever that DT will do a sterling job - just as CE did in reprising the role.

I think (and hope) this is supposed to be a symptom of the regeneration process. I assume he calms down as the episode progresses.

I hope you're right as well because, depsite Stuart's views on my opinion stated earlier, I would love to have my opinion of DT changed by loving his portrayal of The Doctor, I just haven't seen anything yet that is remotely close to doing that.

from outpost gallifrey

A new trailer for The Christmas Invasion had a surprise airing on BBC One shortly before the 10 O'Clock News last night (Monday 19) and again at lunchtime today (Tuesday 20). Again lasting thirty seconds, it features a number of previously unseen clips, including Harriet Jones appealing on television for the Doctor's help, scenes of people in the streets apparently under the mental control of the invading force, a defiant Rose telling the Sycorax to "leave this planet in peace", and the pyjama-clad Doctor emerging from the TARDIS ("Did you miss me?") to confront the aliens. The trailer has yet to appear on the official website.

I caught a bit of that last night, but I was busy so I didn't catch it all in full! When will they put it on the website do you think or will we have to wait?

Yes, I got that too. It was just after EE - and cut off at the beginning, as you said.

Another interview

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4524180.stm

Spoiler
Tennant's Doctor is as courageous and unpredictable as his predecessors, but he adds a trench coat, trainers and mild Cockney accent (supposedly picked up from companion Rose Tyler) to the legacy.

Agreed, some of the clips give the impression that our new Doctor is a hyper-active puppy dog, but having seen a couple of other little bits, such as the Sonic Screwdriver bit from this mornings BBC Breakfast News, it looks like the dark and brooding is still there. Me? I can't wait. I liked DT in the other things I've seen of his, going back to Takin' Over The Asylum, and once he gets time to bed in I'm sure he'll be great. And if he's not, he'll still be beter than Colin Baker. No offence.Only thing that bothers me is that for the first time in my life, I am older than the actor playing the Doctor. Admittedly, only by 2 years, but it's making me feel old.
