Anyone tried/heard Sony Home Theatre systems?
I'm looking into buying a Home Theatre system that I can use with my existing DVD recorder.
Tempted by the look of the Sony HT-SS600. Anyone know anything about this or other Sony surround sound systems (i.e. are they any good?!) |

Although packages like this will never compete with hi-fi separates, they do represent good value for money. Buying a brand like Sony is usually a fairly safe bet, but if you want absolute peace of mind find yourself a nearby Sony Centre or local independent retailler as most of these will gladly let you hear the equipment before you buy.

My son actually bought this very system today.
Although it does not compare to my Denon amp with Acoustic Energy speakers and MJ Acoustics sub,it did cost one sixth of the price and seems excellent value. While looking for one it was hard to find many that did not have a built in dvd player, but my son wanted to use his PS2 for that. We set it up today, and unlike many other models it comes with 3 digital inputs,so his Sky+,PS2 go in via the 2 opticals and his coaxial digital remains spare, while his Gamecube goes in via phono. The sound is very good for the price, however, one annoying thing was the length of the speaker cable. While most were fine, they assume that the front left speaker will go immediately across in front of you to the amp,but there's not even enough to go round the skirting board, let alone all around the back of the room and back round in from the other side,so we need to get some extra cable to extend it,which is what I suspected might happen, but was hoping not to have to. Apart from that it was a good buy.£200 for the kit and £54 for a 3 year warranty and 2 optical cables. Make sure you check exactly what you intend to connect has the correct digital oputputs. |
