Greg Lake - I believe in father Christmas 1975

They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on Earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the Virgin's birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winters light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas Tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire

They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a Silent Night
And they told me a fairy story
'Till I believed in the Israelite
And I believed in Father Christmas
And I looked at the sky with excited eyes
'Till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn
And I saw him and through his disguise

I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave New Year
All anguish pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on Earth
Hallelujah Noel be it Heaven or Hell
The Christmas you get you deserve.

Don't listen to the others Smoochy. I agree with you; Greg Lake - I believe in Father Christmas 1975 is the best Christmas record. Well, certainly in the top three, coz I have a version of Oh Holy Night by Jon Anderson which is equally stunning. And for sheer Christmas party mood The Must Have is Noddy screaming out It's...Christ....mas on Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody.

Wishing you The Joy of The Season

Thank's

Those who think Fairytale of New York is the best dont seem to understand the meaning of Greg Lake's song to appreciate it.

Happy (Festival of Lights) Holiday and a guid New Year to you to.

Nah. The best Christmas song is "No Christmas" by The Wedding Present:

--------------------------------------

I wonder if you're going to ask me why I lied?
I wonder if you're going to show you're angry with me
I wonder if I could explain this if I tried
I wonder if I'm going to know when you forgive me

When you forgive me, you forgive me, you forgive me
Will you stay with me, you stay with me, you stay with me?

And all those awful things you said at first
Don't shout, I understand, you're pretending
To punish me, well I'm listening so do your worst
I don't doubt that you're mad but it can't be ending

It can't be ending, it can't be ending, can't be ending
You're still pretending, still pretending, still pretending

Don't say we've reached the end. You can't be right
For goodness sake you must know I care about you
Please stay my best friend one more night
I couldn't face another day alone without you

Alone without you, alone without you , alone without you
I care about you, I care about you, I care about you

Alone without you, alone without you , alone without you
I care about you, I care about you, I care about you

---------------------------------------

You can always rely on David Gedge for a bit of festive cheer

'Fairytale of New York' is a total 'muso's' song. It's as is you're supposed to like it because it's a Christmas song by a 'proper' band. I don't hate it, not by any means, but I really dislike the reason why I believe some people like it.

That Greg Lake song is very good by the way.

I actually find that quite insulting.
You are saying that because i dont agree with you im not able to understand another song arent you?
Well if thats the case i say that because you dont like FTONY you cant understand what its like to fall in/out of love!!
Just as silly as your point i think?

As I said, it's the reason (I believe) some people like it that bothers me. I don't really mind the song in truth.

Oh yes. Twas the last of the Weddoes' 12 "Hit Parade" singles, where they released one single a month for a year.

Like the total indie saddo I am I bought all the singles on the day they were released (I think they were all deleted after one week, so you had to be quick

"No Christmas" is just brilliant. The b-side featured a quite awful cover of Elton John's "Step Into Christmas", which is a really crap Christmas tune anyway.

There was Christmas rap called Rent-A-Santa by Chris Hill back in 75 who use snippets of music from other artists which was very good you know, it was out at the same time as I Believe In Father Christmas which has real meaning.

Fairytail Of New York is only liked for it's sentimental reasons, I liked it back in 87, but now get pissed off with it's over exposure.

I know all that really. I just like to pretend it's totally obscure and was deleted after a week because the bloke in the video was so crap.

Do you know the video? If so watch out for the same person in kids' show 'Tracy Beaker' on a TV near you soon! Or don't.

I agree absolutely 100%. You can't beat "I Believe in Father Christmas" for lyric, sentiment, melody and arrangement.

As has already been said, "Fairytale of New York" is more appreciated these days for its sentimental value. It was popular at the time of its release and has been one of those songs that is played every year since but without achieving the regard that it has been held in over the past 5 years.

As for party songs, I've always preferred "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" to "Merry Christmas Everybody" which is one of the few Christmas songs I genuinely loathe.

That's how I see it - and it's a bit more poignant since Kirsty MaColl died, but I've always loved it. Second favourite is Happy Christmas (War is Over) and I like When a Child is Born as well. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Slade or Wizard.

I'm guessing he's the guy in the green jumper in the video, having a bit of a miserable Xmas with his girlfriend (and a little girl).

I hate to say it but he looks a bit gormless in that video...

I can't remember what he's wearing, but that's him. Mr Gormless himself!

Of course, he's not gormless really. It's just his marvellous acting skills.
