Question of Ethics: Gwen Stefani?
Maybe Ethics isn't the right word I should use but here goes...
Gwen Stefani @MTV India Awards she wins Best International Pop Debut. I remember seeing another one when she won something or was nominated for "Debut" album/artist... I was just wondering do people think she deserves that kind of award when she's been recording for years, albeit under a diff title? She already has a fan base of sorts... I don't particularly feel too strongly either way, I was just wondering what others thought. Edit: New Artist of the year @ Billboard is the other award |

She has totall remodelled herself since leaving No Doubt and re emerged as a different type of performer, and if you think of a debut album as a solo performer as opposed to being a group, I think it's ok. However, I did prefer her when she was with No Doubt.

Its "Best International Pop Debut". The key part being 'pop debut'. Her music before was ska/punk and now its more pop. If she was to suddenly turn into a rapper (heaven forbid) I'd say she'd be eligable for the "Best International Rap Debut" (if there is such an award).

I imagine that No Doubt fans have snubbed their noses up at Gwen. They went from Ska, to pop-rock and Gwen came out with all this R&B rubbish!
What You Waiting For is her only half decent song - everything else is garbage. |

LOL I thought this thread was going to be about Gwen's ethics regarding her treatment of her Japanese support artists - which has received a great deal of criticism from Salon.com and various US broadsheets.
On the OP, I agree with Reality Sucks too. It's a non-issue. |

I thought she was brilliant in No Doubt but I had a feeling she would go down the more RnB route with her striking features.

I liked ND (not a LOT maybe, but they were decent enough...), but Gwen's new stuff is just diabolical IMO. I much prefer Tom Dumont's lil solo project, some chilled ambient music.. Check it out.. http://www.invincibleoverlord.com/

They're ever present in her videos and performances -- swabbing the deck aboard the pirate ship, squatting gangsta style in a high school gym while pumping their butts up and down, simpering behind fluttering hands or bowing to Stefani. That's right, bowing. Not even from the waist, but on the ground in a "we're not worthy, we're not worthy" pose. She's taken Tokyo hipsters, sucked them dry of all their street cred, and turned them into China dolls.
Real harajuku girls are just the funky dressers who hang out in the Japanese shopping district of Harajuku.... Stefani has taken the idea of Japanese street fashion and turned these women into modern-day geisha, contractually obligated to speak only Japanese in public, even though it's rumored they're just plain old Americans and their English is just fine. She's even named them "Love," "Angel," "Music" and "Baby" after her album and new clothing line l.a.m.b. (perhaps a mutton-themed restaurant will follow). The renaming of four adults led one poster on a message board to muse, "I didn't think it was legal to own human pets. But I guess so if you have the money for it." ... |
