Hi,

Quick question. I currently have a Nokia 6230 and am able to surf the whole web and type in any http:// address I want even if it can't be displayed. I am thinking of upgrading to a 3g phone, possibly with '3' but am a bit concearned as to whether you can do the same thing on their network.

Also want to ask, can you access normal GPRS on a 3g phone, on any network?
If you get a 3g phone on another network e.g. Orange, can you then surf any address or is this a particular thing with 3g phones?

Hope you can clarify because I had a rather confused call with a lady from their indian call centre earlier which didn't really clear things up.

You currently cannot access the full internet via three.

You can on the other networks - they don't have any restrictions about you leaving their 'Walled Garden' (Orange World, o2 active, Vodafonelive! or t-zones) although I think that customers from one network may not be able to access a rival garden.

While you can buy an add-on to allow you to access the 'full' web via a PC and your handset on three (£45 for 500Mb or the soon to launch £15 for 50Mb), it's probably not what you're after.

Hope this answered your question.

Absolutely spot on. 3 have no proper Internet access unless you use a handset as a modem and that costs £45 a month for 512MB of downloads in addition to the cost of your price plan.

Have a look at T-Mobile's Web'n'Walk tariffs as they come with a reasonable amount of data included (They have some really good deals on just now as well).

Another alternative could be Vodafone as they have data bundles that can be used as SMS, MMS, or web browsing. Vodafone have some scortching deals on their website including the new SonyEricsson W900i (Exclusive) from free. Well worth a look!

Happy shopping!

You can now surf most websites outside the walled garden. It cost £2.50 for 5Mb. The sites you can surf are the one's deemed by Three to be compatible with mobile phone's. But if you find a website not included you can submit it to them and they will see if it displays ok on a phone if it does then they will add it to their allowed sites list.

GPRS is the data transfer used by 2G phones. on 3G phones it's different. faster.

WCDMA2000 - Maximum download 384kbps; upload 128kbps i believe.

They have only about 100 sites on offer via 'mobile-web'. Not much sign of the range getting much bigger either although they have added a few since the launch of this add-on.

There is no way 'mobile-web' addresses the issue re Mobile Internet access. As someone said on another forum they have simply changed the 'walled garden' to a 'walled park' and ultimately 3 decide what you can access, not good!
