I for one can't rember every single word I have used ever the last 9 weeks. Chances are he never realised he used it: probably does not unless he is annoyed.

Sophie didn't realise she kept saying "mate" until the interview. It's a small paer of being human. Unlike the pathetic sad losers that try to make a mountain out of trivial little expressions.

I wouldn't mind if he couldn't remember it from 9 weeks ago, but it was only a couple of nights previous.

I'm sure Tim remembered exactly when he used the word, but didn't want to let the others know what it was about.

I thought he pronounced it "comprondy!!" he didn't say comprende, I loved Alex correcting Davina..."It's comprende!!" lol

But in French (en francais), isn't it pronounced 'comprond-ay'? Dunno, it's been yonks since my schooldays.

My mate lived in Belguim for 20 years and can assure you that what Davina pronounced was what I always heard en francais. Tim's just a prat that thinks he knows how to speak french. The highlight of a snob's french is talking about boring wine tasting. I bet you if you asked any of them who the group Indochine were, they wouldn't have a clue.

Find snobish use of french language in english funny, but you want to hear french people's use of english to sound trendy!!

The point I am making mireille is that I've encountered snobs (English speaking) like Tim who show off what little they know. Tim's attempt at a french accent was awful.

Concerning Indochine and the Sirkis brothers, that is very true that no one in England has heard of them.

I remember my French teacher (bless her) telling us that expression not so long ago, we laughed for ages!

That's a very PC comment to make. What I stated wasn't snobby, but a matter of fact. Since when have you seen an Indochine single in the top 40 or even having been released in the UK?

they're slightly different cases: when someone tags words like "mate", "yeah?" (common among teenagers these days), "alright", "know wot i mean" etc , these are all "tag" words that have no real meaning as such: they have functions, mainly to do with group identity and stuff.
Anyway, Tims "comprendez" was different: he was basically trying to say "do you understand" but in a NON-challenging way: sometimes people will do that by saying the word in a different laguage, or in a baby voice for example: somehow it makes it easier to disown the comment, should it backfire. Remember the relationship between Tim (and the other HMs) and BB is one of Parent-child, or even Boss-worker, so the HMs do have to be slightly careful how they treat BB.

Must say I`m surprised noone`s drawn a comparison between the way Tim pronounced it & how David Jason mangled various French Phrases in Only fools & Horses.
Then again - there`s always Arthur Boscombs Policeman in "Allo,Allo" to see as the role model...

I think Tim was trying to say it in ITALIAN not French.
(but then again, for all I know, he thought he was speaking Japanese)
