I wiah to increase the amount of storage on my Toppy 8500, are there any external storage solutions that work with it, or what do you recommend about ugrading the internal drive?

i'm thinking the same about upgrading my internal HDD to about 300gb. Found one on ebay, just wondering if this one would work with the toppy ok.

If you require 300GB or more, then you probably need to go for a drive such as this.

Bear in mind though, Seagate drives are not the quietest and also cannot now be accoustically controlled. These drives, after all, are designed to provide relatively fast access to data on a PC.

CE (Consumer Electronics) devices rarely need such fast access, so do not usually need 7200 RPM hard drives. Most CE device drives rotate at 5400 RPM, which normally create less spin noise and probably less heat.

Samsung drives are normally quieter overall, and also a TAP has been written to allow setting the drive to quiet mode following installation into the Toppy, which is useful.

It's only been warranty considerations which have stopped me doing this sooner.

Hi Peter

There's no external storage solutions for the Toppy that I'm aware of. Possibly extending the IDE ribbon and have a separate PSU for a drive in an external case but this would offer no advantage over installing one within the case as the Toppy will only support one drive. I concur with ceejbee over the choice of a Samsung drive, it's what Topfield decided to put in the more recent 160GB models anyway.

On a different note did you manage to carry out the OTA update with the new firmware? I could make it over to you in early Jan to install if not, sorry not sooner, family Christmas allows no time for anything else...
