BT Payphones and Spectrum Interactive
BT and Spectrum Interactive; the UK's largest payphone operators have announced a slight increase of payphone usage and increase of profit.
BT has withdrawn thousands of kiosks across the country and has also withdrawn its pre-paid calling card business with included BT phonecard,Phonecard plus and Global card. But now it is focusing on BT Chargecard products and services, it is a card which can be access from payphones, home or business phone and mobiles by the access code 144 or 0800-144-144. You can call anywhere at anytime, all charges are billed to a bank account or BT bill. BT believes that its customers have relaised how much cheaper it is to call landlines from its payphones which costs just 30p for 15 minutes! Equivalent to 2p per minute. BT also claimed that it is not going to remove much more kiosks and intends on introducing new products and services in the future. Spectrum Interactive, the second largest provider formerly New World Payphones and NWP Spectrum now has over 10,000 payphones. Over 2004 and 2005 it aquiried UK Explorer and the vast majority of Infolines Public Networks neglected and eyesore interphone kiosks and has replaced them with new kiosks and equipment costing around £2 Million. It has also purchased Cardtel, a small payphone operator in the South east operating and managing 638 payphones. Spectrum Interactive is phasing its smartz cards (prepaid cards) out over 2006 and will no longer be avaialble. Although it is planning to launch a chargecard service. |
