RCE Encoding
Hi everyone,
Im looking to order some region 1 DVD's on line and I now notice that many of them carry something called RCE encoding that prevents them being played on most multi region DVD players. I have a Sony DVD player which isnt multi region but I had it chipped a couple of years ago to play region 1. I know you guys cant say for definate but are RCE DVD's likely to work on a chipped DVD player? I dont know what chip was put in my DVD player and I dont live near the shop anymore to ask them. On a side note I have asked this question before but did not get a reply. I have a Sony DD and DTS amp and I want to know whether this will work with region 1 DVD's or whether Uk amps are not able to decode region 1 sound. Thanking you in anticipation |

Most multiregion methods automatically select R1 but some require you to manually select R1 to play a R1 RCE disk.
If you know the name of the modification used on your Sony then perhaps some one else has the same thing on their player and can advise. The audio on DVD's is not region affected, DD and DTS are the same on any DVD although if the disk is rejected by the player you won't be able to access the audo anyway

What SOny DVD player are you talking about?
I had a chipped (by SevenOaks) 725D that with auto region set would not play RCE but could be manually set to region 1 and thus far no problems. I'm not at home at the moment, but will dig out the details when I'm back. May help. Guy |

My Sony players 725, 9000 & F21 all require changing to manual R1 only, rather than auto region set to play RCE disk.
What disks are you interested in as in reality there are only around 12 RCE DVDs. Many retailers like Play and Futureent list most DVDs from Columbia and Warner (who have used it in the past), as having RCE to cover themselves in case they do and so you can't complaint and ask for a refund. I can't think of any new releases this year having RCE. Columbia the main users found it was causing problems with US customers who had chipped players and most players in the Uk can work around it. If your DVD supplier can't tell you if the region setting on your player is manually selectable, have a look at the techtronics.com ? website. They are a retailer who have their region change instructions as downloadable pdf files on their site. I had bought my player from a small company that had gone bust but the Techtronic instructions worked with my player. I think with Sony's most retailers use the same chip to make them multiregion. |
