I'm not entirely sure that it will be just the judges. I expect that the studio audience will be representing the public vote, as was the case in Strictly Ice Dancing last year, when David Seaman won the competition.
Keeping on topic, I'm afraid to say that I was disappointed with Colin and Erin's freestyle dance. There was nothing wrong with the dance
per se, but my feelings are more to do with the occasion and circumstance in which it was performed - the Grand Final of Series Three. My comments are not intended to criticise Erin or Colin as I have voted for them in the past and greatly enjoyed the consistent quality that was inherent in their dances across this series.
What I find to be a crying shame is that I know that they could have really treated us to spectacular display worthy of any professional exhibition. I dearly wanted to see the culmination of their hard work from the series expressed in a dance that blended together the graceful elegance of the Waltz with the cheeky nature of the Cha Cha. A dance which lingered seductively like a Rumba, then exploded like a Tango. I wanted to see a celebration of their partnership as exotic and far flung as a sizzling Samba, then flow as in a Foxtrot.
Above all, I wanted to see a dance that encapsulated the journey that they took from the beginning right to the end of the series. Shackling a dummy to their hands and feet robbed them of this. It restricted their movement and obscured their faces. There would be no gymnastic flourishes here, no swift changes from one style of dance to the next and no chemistry because they were not dancing together in each others' arms.
However, I do respect Erin, or any professional for that matter, for following the courage of her convictions and attempting something different. Champions are not made without realising what the bitter taste of failure and rejection is like. Ask Lilia about her experience of being knocked out after the Series Two semi-final. Up until that heart-stopping moment after the dance has finished, no-one can surely predict the reaction of others - it's like a film release - nobody could say whether it would turn out to be a flop or a blockbuster after all of the hard work and effort that went into creating it. People will either take it to their hearts or cast it out into the cold.
And given that Colin was also willing to take this risk and he did state in the final that he was aware of it, I do not think that there can be any blame attributed whatsoever. Colin has worked with Erin at an intensive and intimate level, so I feel that he must have trusted her judgement. He was prepared to accept the result, come what may. And, like Erin, he was a gracious runner-up in the final - a class act and a true professional. You only need to see his smile in the closing credits to realise this.
Thankfully, Colin and Erin have another opportunity to redress this situation. I want them to come out fighting in the Christmas Special and I want them to burn the floor with their footwork and glide with the grace of a dancing virtuoso. May the best partnership win on the day, but as a spectator and SCD fan, I want them all to show their fans, their critics - their audience - what they are really made of.
